MIntroduction- The teen gene typically includes stereotypical characters, comedy and caters to a teenage audience. Ferris Bueller’s day off fits into the category of a teen comedy because it features coming of age, friendships and weak authority figures. The film centres around Ferris Bueller the protagonist, his best friend Cameron, his girlfriend Sloane and they enjoy an adventurous day ditching school.
Symbolism in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape Do you ever feel like you are falling? Like you are dreaming about falling and when you do fall you wake up? But it’s not a dream and you actually are falling? The Grape family lives in Endora, Iowa they are a far from normal family who are struggling through life ever since their father committed suicide. Gilbert Grape is the main character he is 24 years old.
What is so important about this, is that it helps the viewers to have a general idea of how Mrs. Grape was, physically and emotionally, before showing the character’s current features and appearance. The
John Steinbeck, in the novel, Grapes of Wrath, identifies the hardships and struggle to portray the positive aspects of the human spirit amongst the struggle of the migrant farmers and the devastation of the Dust Bowl. Steinbeck supports his defense by providing the reader with imagery, symbolism and intense biblical allusions. The author’s purpose is to illustrate the migrant farmers in order to fully exploit their positive aspects in the midst of hardships. Steinbeck writes in a passionate tone for an audience that requires further understanding of the situation.
In the novel What’s Eating Gilbert Grape by Peter Hedges, the main character, Gilbert Grape, has romantic relationships with two women, Mrs. Betty Carver and Becky. Mrs. Betty Carver, in her forties, is a married woman. When Gilbert was a senior in high school, Mrs. Carver invited Gilbert over to her house, and over time they began having more intimate relations. This has been developing over the course of six years, and Gilbert is now twenty four years old. Becky is an otherworldly fifteen year old who has moved to Gilbert’s home town of Endora, Iowa for the summer.
The poet, Lascelles Abercrombie once said, “There is only one thing which can master the perplexed stuff of epic material into unity; and that is, an ability to see in particular human experience some significant symbolism of man 's general destiny.”. He talked about how powerful of a tool symbolism is and how it is the only thing that can truly define a highly complex ‘destiny’ or series of events. Symbolism is something that is found throughout Harper Lee’s book, To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee shows the reader that racism is a product of society,she portrays the matter through her symbolism of the mad dog, the birds and the bugs.
Through the use of a younger cast and romantic relationships, the target audience was definitely reached and moved by this film. By effectively using the rhetorical appeals, the audience was able to relate to some of the ideas shown and look at their community through an entire new lenses. The Breakfast Club can be classified as a coming to age film. According to “As Film Studies: The Essential Introduction”, the coming of age films tend to rely on dialogue and emotion and often involves an important decision made in a short period of time (271).
In the film What’s eating Gilbert Grape directed by Lasse Hallström a character who changes is the protagonist, Gilbert Grape. Gilbert experiences the troubling feeling of being trapped in Endora by the heavy responsibilities of taking care of his family. Throughout the film, Gilbert’s pessimistic outlook on life at the beginning evolves into a more opened and positive attitude. These changes occur when he meets Becky, who forces him to re-think and fight against his strong conscience that is not letting him move on. This is important because it enable Gilbert to deal with all his problems and look into the future.
The manner of perception demonstrated by the director, Lasse Hallström, of “What Eating Gilbert Grape?” is established towards people with mental disability but specifically autism. Arnie Grape who is played by Leonardo DiCaprio is a 17 year old boy with autism and shares everything with his older brother and carer Gilbert Grape who was played by Johnny Depp. Arnie elucidates basic behavioural and social aspects that a person with autism would have. Hallstrom interprets a person with autism as a minority by clearly separating the town of Endora, Iowa from not just Arnie but the entire Grape family. The media manages to incorrectly interpret the behaviour, social acceptance and understanding of people with a disability and this movie directly
Zootopia is a Disney movie that contains metaphors about issues such as prejudice, stereotype and racial discrimination in the real world. I might judge the movie before I watch it because it is a Disney movie, that often makes movies for kids. In the movie, the bunny-Judy and the fox- Nick was both victims of bullying when they are younger. It shows that they went through a different pathway, but end up in the same position.
Arnie is represented throughout the movie as a burden to Gilbert and the rest of the Grape family,
The Breakfast Club is not in fact a movie about bacon 'n eggs. It’s a coming of age film about five coincidentally different teenagers all linked together by one common element, Saturday detention. At first, they are all close-minded and judgmental of each other until coming to realize they may be from different circles of friends but are not so different in the end. This film is still remarkably relatable to this day. Everyone in this film is in his or her own societal bubbles, but come to understand they are all facing the same problems.
Overall, The Breakfast Club is a classic teen film by John Hughes that depicts the different perceptions of the five high school students who come from different sociological groups. The actors played the stereotypical characters well and it made it easier to understand the film. In conclusion, the breakfast club is one of my favorite movies because it explains accurately the various concepts such as stereotypes, peer pressure, family issues, and groupthink and those notions relate to the lives of many individuals during their teenage
The Breakfast Club portrays elements of adolescent development very well. In this stage of our lives we are trying to figure out who we are. Some of us may explore different identities and there are others that just do what others tell them to do. The movie depicted role confusion in each of the characters. It also talked about peer pressure and how it influences how we act.
In the short story “Everyday Use,” Alice Walker shows the conflicts and struggles with people of the African-American culture in America. The author focuses on the members of the Johnson family, who are the main characters. In the family there are 2 daughters and a mother. The first daughter is named Maggie, who had been injured in a house fire has been living with her mom. Her older sister is Dee, who grew up with natural beauty wanted to have a better life than her mother and sister.
