She quickly staged the perfect murder by finding a witness that can prove she was out of the house. And when the cops arrived, she fed them the only piece of evidence, the lamb’s leg.
This film incorporated many symbolic aspects, such as the lamb. What makes this short story interesting is that we did not expect Mary to murder her own husband because she was so into him and not eat until Patrick comes home. In the beginning, before Mary kills her husband, Mary’s actions were a supportive wife, showed a lot of affection but Patrick was talking to her in short sentences.

Mary Maloney kills her husband by hitting him in the back of the head with a leg of lamb after he gives her shocking news. After killing her husband Mary begins cooking the leg of lamb in the oven and then goes to the grocery store to create an alibi. Later into the investigation Mary offers the investigators that same leg of lamb that she had used to kill her husband and cooked after so that they are unable to find the weapon to use as evidence. Because of this, Mary gets away with her husband's murder.

In Roald Dahl’s short story, “Lamb to the Slaughter,”, the character of Mary Maloney is a pregnant housewife, is expecting her husband Patrick to return home from his local job as a policeman. Unfortunately, upon his arrival she is greeted with bad news and she does not doesn’t take it well. Her husband says he is leaving her and without questioning why, she takes a frozen lamb and swings it to the back of his head. When the story opens up, Mary seems like a loving and devoted wife and then she becomes insane and at the very end clever. So Tthe author indicates that Mary is a woman of different personality traits and we are left to unravel her true identity.

Mary is being manipulative by make the police feel like they have a good job in finding Patrick’s killer because they are his friends, even though she is the real killer. Obviously much more happens in this story consisting of humour, action, mystery and irony. Roald Dahl is a master of writing short stories in ways that attract readers, draw them into what is happening through using literary elements and universal themes to make the story relatable to the readers. In this story the main literary elements were foreshadowing, situation and dramatic irony, imagery and symbolism which really drew me in and kept me attached to the story. Literary elements are what make a story powerful and attracts readers to continue reading in the story and in this story they highlight the universal theme of Revenge and Betrayal.

During the story Mary’s husband decides he wants to leave Mary after she’s already six months pregnant with her husband. Something tweaks in her head and ends his life with a leg of lamb, that she was going to cook for dinner.
