In my creative narrative titled “Is This Where I Belong?”I aimed to explore the concept of belonging. To do this, I developed enthralling character development in my extract through the use of symbolism. Inspired by Steven Herricks verse novel “Cold Skin'', I wanted to explore the idea of belonging through the protagonist's perspective, focusing on their personal struggles. In the highly expressive, symbolic “ This mine is where I want to be, with the returned soldiers and my mates from school, who earn a decent wage doing a real job.” Eddies yearn for a ‘normal’ life. The literary technique of symbolism was used in “I clutch Chris in my left hand and guide myself with my right”. In my story, the concept of Chris Isaak's music was used as an emotive symbol of yearning for a normal life. In the case of my protagonist, life before the asteroid. Throughout my story, Chris Isaak's music allowed my character to indulge in a mental escape, providing familiarity and comfortability. Furthermore, this allows the audience to understand the valuability that her previous life held, and how this change is difficult for her.
