Halsey utilizes the symbolism of color in order to give the viewer an outlook of the emotions she felt throughout the relationship with G-Eazy. According to psychology researchers, color has the ability to influence a variety of human behaviors, such as object recognition, the identification of facial expressions, and the ability to categorize stimuli as positive or negative. People are often seen associating bright colors with positive emotions and dark colors with negative emotions (Sutton). In Halsey’s music video, majority of the scenes showcase dark tones. Cigarettes are introduced in the start of the music video, with multiple scene cuts after one light of a cigarette. With a distant stare, Halsey is seen alone in an empty room, surrounded by darkness. She looks as if she is empty herself. Afterwards, the scene quickly cuts to her boyfriend alone, lighting his cigarette. In the span of a few seconds, the seemingly happy relationship becomes broken as the two are seen screaming at each other. With the inclusion of the cigarette in the music video, Halsey communicates to the viewer of the discord in the relationship and further reveals her boyfriend’s struggle with addiction. The cigarette is used as a symbol to allude to G-Eazy’s addiction with drugs and its role in the breakup. Additionally, Halsey sings about being used and discarded by her boyfriend. She repeatedly sings, “Thinking you could live without me,” in the song. Halsey, in a sense, compares herself to the cigarette. G-Eazy chooses to stay with the cigarette and Halsey is thrown away instead. It can be inferred that the drug addiction made the relationship slowly crack as they were seen fighting more and more.
