An individual’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being can be profoundly and permanently impacted by the experience of separation, which can change their sense of self, relationships, and the course of their entire lives. The short story Perpetual Motion by Tony Hoagland and the artwork Approaching Shadow by Fan Ho both explore the theme of separation in individuals' lives in different ways. In Perpetual Motion, the narrator discovers that human ties are transient and fleeting as a result of his search for a long-lasting remedy to his loneliness and alienation from the outside world. The difficulty that many people have to feel a part of something in a world that is constantly changing and evolving is brought to light in this story. This image captures the universal human experience of feeling alone despite our best efforts to communicate and establish connections. Feeling alone is truly a universal human experience that can occur for many reasons such as physical isolation, lack of social connections, emotional distance from others, and personal struggles with mental health. Regardless of what caused this feeling, feeling lonely can lead to a multitude of negative emotions such as sadness, anxiety, and despair,and it can also impact someone’s physical health. These feelings cause sleep disturbances which impact the energy level of the individual. Appetite changes will cause under-eating over overeating resulting in weight gain or weight loss which increases the stress of the said person.
