The book Night is written by Elie Wiesel. For my history project I had to find a recurring word, or symbol from the novel Night. The word death is used frequently throughout the book. During World War II, Elie, his family, and other jews from the area, were deported to German concentration camps, known as Aushwitz and Buchenwald. As I was reading the book “The Minister’s Black Veil” have mentioned the color’s symbolism. The color black represent the negative things in our life. F0r example, people think that if a black cat cross the way your are walking, that symbolize as a bad luck day, which means that something bad is going to happen to that person. So black symbolism represent bad luck. I also think that color veil represents the secrecy.
Black symbolizes death, and night, and in the story there is death. The death of father Hooper which takes place in the climax. His beloved wife, stays right by his side as she died as well. They were both in love, and she loved him endlessly even though the veil was sitting on his head every step of the way. This can be connected to Romeo and Juliet, the most exaggerated of exaggerated, because Romeo and Juliet both died to be together because their “love” for eachother was so strong and they were inseparable.

The title evokes certain responses in the reader.
On the other hand, even though Prince Prospero tried his best to escape the horrible reality of the plague, in the end he died because of it. He failed to realize that the Read Death had entered his castle in the form of the masked figure. The masked figure clearly represented Death. The figure was “tall and gaunt,” wore “habiliments of the grave,” and had the “countenance of a stiffened corpse.” The “black velvet room” also hinted the presence of a mystery figure that would bring nothing but misfortune.

One of the more prominent allusions is the reference of the Plutonian Shore which refers to the underworld and the wait for the ferryman to take the banished across to the gates of Hell (Davis). The symbolism of the Goddess Athena and of her great wisdom helps the reader understand how the author will always have the curse of persistent memory; a "mournful and never-ending remembrance" (MeJohnson).

It’s not clear if any characters will die, or if the book thief will live. Since the author mentions the color black, the reader is left to anticipate the tragic events that will soon unfold.
In Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allen Poe, many symbols are used to justify the overall purpose and meaning of the story. These symbols include the ebony clock, the seven chambers, the scarlet and black room, and the Red Death itself. Each of these symbols help characterize the Prince and his guests, along with foreshadowing the overall outcome of the story. This is an important symbol in the story because it emphasizes the theme of inescapable death. The next example is the Black Clock in the black room. This symbolizes the span of life. In the story, the clock struck midnight and the Prince’s time was up, symbolizing his life being over.
In “The Masque of Red Death”, the author includes 7 rooms, one being black, which is where the Prince locks himself in: “There were seven-an imperial suite… The seventh apartment was closely shrouded in black velvet tapestries that hung all over the ceiling and down the walls…” (pg. 58). The seventh rooms shows how death is always there and always will be. The Prince fears that he’s going to be contaminated, so he does everything in his power to avoid death. Symbols express ideas and emotions through an indirect approach, any individual can view a symbol and interpret it in their own way. It is a more personal form of expression in literature. The Night Circus shows many forms of colour symbolism that furthers the plot line and adds obscurity to the text.
The prince, indignant, asks to the figure to reveal himself but he doesn’t answer and starts walking towards the black room where Prince Prospero tries to kill him. But as soon as the Prince touches him, the figure disappears and Prospero falls dead on the ground. Immediately everybody at the party falls on the ground and die, the clock stops working and the candles blow out. The Masque of Red Death is an allegory for the conflict between humans and nature, life and death.
