In the novel We Were The Mulvaneys the author Joyce Carol Oates gives the readers an insight of the thoughts of one of the characters, Judd Mulvaney. In the novel The Poisonwood Bible, by Barbara Kingsolver, Leah Price moves to the Congo with her family as part of a missionary. Through their experiences in the Congo, and living amongst a community with many political conflicts, Leah discovers the importance of justice and selflessness. Kingsolver uses assertive and benevolent tones, and symbolism throughout the story to portray the voice of Leah, illustrating Leah’s determination to adamantly strive for justice and equality for Africa and its people, rather than believing that her heritage, her father and God are superior to those around her. Her father’s authority and idealism overshadows her point of view, as she is highly set on her father’s approval and ultimately, God’s approval too. By using phrases such as “But my father needs permission only from the Saviour, who obviously is all in favor of subduing the untamed wilderness for a garden (36)”, Kingsolver establishes Leah’s narrow-minded belief that her father is ‘A Chosen One from God’ and he will pacify the Congolese.

In the movie Moonlight, the significance of water in Chiron’s life appears multiple times, like his christening experience when learning how to swim, to dipping his head into ice water, to his first sexual experience with Kevin by the ocean. While growing up, Chiron had been found by Juan, his mother's drug dealer. Although Juan was supplying to his mother, He and his girlfriend Theresa had befriended chiron and had cared for him. When the people of the city heard that Jesus and the disciples were out, they gathered all of their sick and wounded and followed Jesus out to the shore. After Jesus heard of the people waiting for him on the shore he and his Disciples decided to dock the boat and greet the people. Jesus talked to the group and healed their sick and wounded until night started to fall upon them. At this point, the Disciples advised Jesus to send the people to the city to get dinner from the market. Jesus told them not to send anyone away but to feed them with what they had.
There are many more examples of water mentioned in the Old Testament which remind of life. In the account of the great flood, water is connected to the danger of death. The account tells us that every species died except those that were in the ark with Noah. After the flood life begins again, new and fresh.

During the journey across the Atlantic, the ships were stuck in a part of the ocean with no wind and limited currents. The crew was stuck at sea for many weeks, unable to resupply. Food was rationed and sailors began to grow restless. Eventually, a current took carried the ships and began to sail again. The sailors spotted land on December 8th, 1519.
