Logan Tucker Professor Butler Religion 105 10/18/2017 Interpretive Essay Matthew 14:13-21 is an intriguing passage about Jesus feeding and healing the 5,000. The audience for this passage may come as an eyeopener for some readers. The passage itself reveals several things concerning Jesus and who he really is. After Jesus and his Disciples learned of John the Baptist’s death they took a boat out onto the ocean for some solitude. When the people of the city heard that Jesus and the disciples were out, they gathered all of their sick and wounded and followed Jesus out to the shore. After Jesus heard of the people waiting for him on the shore he and his Disciples decided to dock the boat and greet the people. Jesus talked to the group and healed their sick and wounded until night started to fall upon them. At this point, the Disciples advised Jesus to send the people to the city to get dinner from the market. Jesus told them not to send anyone away but to feed them with what they had. The Disciples gathered all of the food they could find and needed up with five loaves of bread and two fish. Jesus then proceeded to distribute the food throughout the Disciples and bless the food. It is believed the book of Matthew was first written in Aramaic or Hebrew and then later translated into Greek. The book was translated to Greek for the gentile people to explain the Jewish tradition and values. Matthew wrote this because he wanted it to be understood as the new interpretation of the laws of Moses and to show that Jesus is the messiah that has come according to the Old Testament. The book's best audience seems to be Jewish christians living within the proximity of the homeland and gentiles that aren't aware of Jewish beliefs.
