Disney’s fiftieth animated film Tangled, became a favorable film for the adolescent viewers. While watching the film, I saw how the characters were treated and how they presented themselves during certain situations. Rapunzel showed her inner psychoanalytical self through symbols, fascinations, and family dynamics.
Tangled is a film that has many symbols within. The tower, Rapunzel’s hair, and the sun from her kingdom are some examples of symbols seen throughout the movie. The tower represents safety. Many times throughout the film, Mother Gothel tells Rapunzel that the tower is her only safe place and that the world is dark, selfish and cruel. She illustrated herself on a mural, sitting on a field watching the “floating lights” or in other words, lanterns. The representation of these lights is the mystery of the outside and new adventures. When given the opportunity Rapunzel ignored everything Mother Gothel told her and left with Flynn Ryder and pet chameleon Pascal. This fascination reveals her innermost desires and dreams.
As a baby Rapunzel was taken by Mother Gothel. Raising Rapunzel to be scared of the outside hoggs the power of Rapunzel’s hair and uses her to her advantage. Mother Gothel, makes her sing a special song that will Enlighten the power in the hair to make Mother Gothel feel young and beautiful. Not only does Mother Gothel uses Rapunzel to her advantage but she also talks down upon Rapunzel. To illustrate, the time when Rapunzel built up the confidence to ask Mother Gothel if she can go see the “ floating lights”. Gothel said “no!” and gave Rapunzel a big speech on why she shouldn't go outside. At the end of the speech, Gothel says “ I see a strong, confident, beautiful young lady: Oh! And you're there too.” making Rapunzel feel self conscious and worse than she already did when Mother Gothel rejected Rapunzel’s question. During this dreadful time for Rapunzel she made a friend named Pascal and he helped her during those times and encouraged her to stand up for what she wants and believes
