Life is full of unexpected things, and sometimes the best things happen all unexpected. Sometimes things that you fear will happen and then if they happen you realise it wasn’t all that bad and makes you realise that you might have changed for the better. For example a lot of people detest going to the dentist, but then when you actually are done with the visit and done with the treatment, you realise that it actually wasn’t that bad and now you have better teeth and maybe a little bit more experience of going to the dentist. People go to new places all the time but who had guessed that going to a place several times could change you and make you a stronger individual. In this setting the girl is very comfortable but she longs to be out in the river and swim. She longs for nature. This setting is several times described as hot and this symbolises that here she is more tense and feels as if she is caged due to the tense atmosphere. Which can be seen by the following quotes: “She is so hot”(p.1 l. 10) “And today she is so hot”(p.1 l. 21) “ By these quotes we can see that there is an indication to her mind, which is tense and hot and needs to get cooled in the water. The setting is also there to describe the state of her mind which can be seen in the beginning of the story by this quote: “Three weeks of windless sun weigh down on the fields: nothing moves except the water, slow, steady, a slick of olive green pouring away from her.” This quote is an indication of the state of her mind in the beginning of the story, where everything just is so static in her life with the routines and overload of work. The second setting is the river where she goes to swim. At the second setting, which is described as cold, she feels more relaxed and peaceful. Here she has the chance to forget her normal boring life and all the things she fears. At this setting she sees the swan and connects with it at the end.
