In the story “Winky” by George Saunders the use of symbols is used to show how you may get annoyed at things in life and think you hate them then you realize they are important and you can’t get rid of them. Neil experiences this in this story with His sister winky. Niel goes to a seminar led by Rodgers, At this seminar Niel starts to realize his sister Winky is causing problems. He tries to kick her out but he can’t. She means too much to him. The first symbol is Winky. Winky is Neil's sister. Neil wants to kick Winky out so he goes to a seminar. Niel comes out of it feeling ready to kick Winky out. When he gets home it suddenly doesn’t feel right. He tried to bring it up but he couldn't. His sister loves him too much and he realizes he loves her too. “Niel Niel was the all time sweetie pie”.(George Saunders) His sister is symbolizing the things we love and hate. The gold hat represents the solving of those problems. In the seminar the gold hat claims to have saved you from those people stopping you from inner peace or being people that were causing problems.``Who would keep us from inner peace”(George Saunders). This is similar to Winky because Niel says Winky is an obstacle in his life. As the hat did he wanted her out. He wants his peace. The Hat ends up being Tom Rodgers and he leads the seminar. But this Gold hat ultimately Represents though you may feel something is preventing you not feeling inner peace as used in the story. You are the one.
