Compassion for the Simple-Minded Have you ever felt sympathy for someone? Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is about Lennie and George, who are two migrant workers. Lennie is dense and he does not know how to care for himself. George cares for Lennie. John Steinbeck does a fantastic job of making Lennie a sympathetic character because he has characteristics of a child. Lennie is a static solicitous character. Lennie is very loyal and he stands by George’s side. George and Lennie have been life long companions and Lennie would do anything that George tells him to. Lennie jumped into a lake as a result of George asking him to do so. Lennie’s loyal characteristic makes you feel sorry for him because he cannot fend for himself because he is so loyal. He is infatuated with soft objects. Lennie pets dead mice, multiple times throughout the book to quell his fixation of soft objects. Lennie says multiple times throughout the book “ I get to tend the rabbits,” The reason that he says this repeatedly is because he really wants to take care of and also pet soft objects like rabbits. Lennie gets fired from his job as a result of touching a girl's dress that he thought was soft.This makes Lennie relatable because people tend to obsess over objects. People feel empathy and sympathy for people they can relate to. Thus Lennie’s obsession with soft objects makes him a sympathetic character. Lennie is a static character. The book stated, “Lennie’s big fingers fell to stroking her hair.” Lennie touches a woman without their consent, he touched a woman last time and he got fired from his job. This situation shows that Lennie does not learn from his mistakes. Lennie does not develop throughout the story. He does not gain any knowledge or grasp a new understanding of life.
