Synthesis Essay Assessing the attainability of the American dream, one may ascertain the notion’s futility and impracticality due to consistent social controversies, impending inequality of opportunity, and persistent discontent of one’s own being. Society’s impending social issues, such as racism and sexism, make the American dream of equality and prosperity exactly that, a dream, hypothetical and utterly unattainable. Everyone desires to live in a perfect world where everyone is equal and successful. Some desire this so much so that they have fooled themselves into thinking it actually exists in today’s society. Unfortunately however, it does not. In modern society success and opportunities are simply a game of chance. One must be born into a life of privilege or be lucky enough to encounter some great opportunity that may lead them to success. Equality of opportunity doesn’t truly exist today, hindering the accessibility of the American dream. According to author and magazine contributor David Kamp, the American dream is well and good in the sense that in the United States there is always a sense of possibility and a decent chance of achieving one’s dreams and a successful future. While Kamp has a point that there is always some chance of obtaining one’s dream, that chance is dwindled down considerably by the lack of equality of opportunity in society.
