Taking A Look At Original Signal Detection Theory

Original Signal Detection Theory was developed for psychological tasks, disassociated from the justice system. The task involved individuals to wear headphones in a soundproof room that were instructed to individuals to identify whether the noise heard through there headphones was a signal, (beeping noise), or a white noise plus a fine noise. In other words, the objective for each participant in each test trial to say whether the test trial presented was a noise or a signal. When conducting basic data, if the participant responds and states that its a signal, and in fact it is, then we would call that a “hit”. If the participant responds to a “signal”, and states that it is a “noise”, we would call this a “miss”. In addition, if the participant responds to a signal with “noise”, this is called a false alarm. Lastly, if the participant responds to a noise with “just a noise”, this is called “correct rejection”.
