Education is the backbone of society. It provides younger generations with knowledge. The knowledge to chose their own future. The definition of education is “to provide with information” (Educate). This is the purpose of education, but the way information is presented and how it is used, is what varies in the education system.
Education based on social mobility is to provide students with information to help them make informed choices. A true education yields a student with the ability to succeed, and the ability to move between social classes. Education is meant to prepare students for their futures. The purpose is not to teach students to “Play a constructive role in democratic society,” or “meet the demands of the occupational market place,” the purpose is to “adapt the students to the existing socioeconomic structure” (Labaree, 1997, p.50).

The definition of socioeconomic is the measure of someone’s social and economic position compared to others. Former president Ronald Reagan’s first campaign slogan was “Are you better off then you were 4 years ago?(Auerbach, 2015)” Social Mobility is the cornerstone of this loaded question.
