Porter five forces analysis is a framework to analyze the level of competition within an industry and business (Wikipedia). Taking Talladega College for example as an industry. The five forces are as followed: buyers the current students, suppliers the alumni and investors, new entries the community college CACC, substitute the online classes and the fast track, and competition the PWI’s and other HBCU’s. The current students are the buyers because they are paying to attend Talladega College, parents are paying out of pocket while others use financial aid and scholarship and loans. Without the students, the college wouldn’t be able to provide the service of a higher education in return for revenue, Talladega College main objective is to provide higher education for future leaders. By these schools being community Colleges they can’t provide some courses but Talladega College can. New entries are just starter ups not real competition. The substitutes for Talladega College would be the online classes and the Fast Track Program that the college offer. Although, it’s still through Talladega, you can receive your service (higher education), it still a substitute from sitting in the actual classroom setting. It’s a flexible way for students to obtain their degree and still work and raise families. The competition is every other HBCU in Alabama and the PWI’s in the state. That’s just the local competition, Talladega also have competition with other HBCU’s and PWI’s worldwide. The ways Talladega College try to out-do their competition is with tours, high school visitation, recruitment days and sporting events, by advertising the College in ways that attract their future students (the buyers), In order to compete with these other institutions Talladega must continue to find ways to beat the
