Is it worth losing your inner beauty, to have a pretty body image for an alternative? The famous best-selling author Mandy Hale states that “Outer beauty pleases the eye however inner beauty captivates the heart” (Mandy Hale). In the novel Uglies written by Scott Westerfeld, the protagonist; Tally Youngblood, is blinded by the society she lives in that impacts her perspective on her body image. To begin with, Tally goes through a significant development that alters her mind set. Moving on, the time period and locations that take place in the novel assists on exposing Westerfeld’s prominent overall message. When Shay escapes the city, Tally is brought to an interrogation room in Special Circumstances. Dr. Cable who works in Special Circumstances is aware that Tally is hiding something about Shay’s escape, so she makes her “a promise [that] until [Tally] helps them to [her] very best ability, [she] will never be pretty” (Westerfeld 106). All Tally desires is to change her ugly face and become pretty. The thought about her existing as an ugly for her entire life, frightens Tally. In contrast, Tally also made a promise to her close friend Shay. According to Tally, “it is important” that her “promise to Shay about [her] location, would be [kept] a secret” (Westerfeld 121). Shay and Tally shared many wild memories from when they met, which affects how Tally does not want to tell Dr. Cable where Shay went since she made a promise and Shay trusts her not to tell anyone. Therefore, Tally is stuck in a situation where she does not know what decision to make. It is either be disloyal to her close friend or be living her worst nightmare which is being ugly forever. Furthermore, Tally makes a decision where she goes helps Special Circumstances find Shay. Yet, when Tally is sent to find The Smoke all alone, she becomes inspired with the people there and realizes that is the place where she belongs. Tally throws “her tracker in the fire” so Special Circumstances cannot find her and all of sudden she is “free of Dr. Cable [and] [feels] like she is where she belongs” (Westerfeld 268). Tally abandons her pretty operation to be in The Smoke. She rather be ugly her whole life and live with the amazing people she is surrounded by.
