How-to Make Gunpowder During the Tang Dynasty The invention of gunpowder was made to gain immortality, by Chinese alchemists during the 8th century Tang Dynasty (Ross). The results led them accidently to an invention that explodes, which was called huo yao (Guide). Gunpowder was used to to help treat skin diseases and to kill insects (Guide). The Chinese people discovered to their advantage, that the powder could be used as an explosive weapon later on in the 9th century (Guide). Not only was it used for causes such as these, but fireworks were made, for entertainment (Ross). Placed into a bamboo tube and strapped to an arrow, was shot into the air and the escaping gases exposed to oxygen, caused a spark to light (Ross). To this very day, gunpowder is still used for the same purposes as the Chinese, and fireworks are well-known around the world for any occasion. What are the special ingredients that the Chinese alchemists used to make gunpowder, which helped benefit their dynasty?
