The first Target opened on May 1, 1962 — its history began long before in 1902 with Dayton’s Dry Goods Company, founded by George D. Dayton in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1911 it changed its name to The Dayton Company. In 1960 they introduced a mass marketing discount store that catered to value-oriented shoppers seeking a higher-quality experience transforming the organization from a family-run department-store chain into one of the nation's largest discount-store chain. In 1961 they combined the fashion world with the discount world; a quality store with quality merchandise at discount prices, and a discount supermarket, including 75 departments in all, with the plans to include wide aisles, easy-to-shop displays, fast checkout and a large …show more content…

Finally, on May 1st, 1962 Target had their first grand opening in Roseville, Minnesota. This new awe-inspiring idea combined many of the best department store features of fashion, quality, and service with the low prices of a discounter. In that same year, after abundant success, they continued to open more locations. In 1967 they expanded their corporation by going public; forming an Initial Public Offering (IPO) on Oct. 18, 1967, with five autonomous divisions: Dayton's department stores, Target Stores, B. Dalton Bookseller, Dayton Jewelers and Dayton Development Company. In 1968 they revamped their logo into what we know of it today: a single ring and bullseye. The first of many distribution centers open in 1969 — currently one located near us in Shafter, CA. The First SuperTarget® Store is introduced providing guests with the convenience of one-stop-shop including: multiple departments, pharmacy, and a grocery section with fresh produce, dairy, meat — opens in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1995.
