Teapots, in my opinion, are a symbol of peace and tranquility. The faces of these survivors with faded words, cracks, and scorch marks embedded onto the teapot to represent how the assault has disturbed the peace in their lives. In order to merge the teapot with the faces, I elongated the foot to create a neck, and shaped the handle to symbolize and ear. I wanted to make sure to include a male face on one side to express that rape is not just a women’s problem, but also something that many men face. Male victims of sexual assault are often ignored and told that “men can’t be raped by women”, because society erroneously expects men to consent to sex with any woman under any circumstances.
