The American economy was greatly influenced by advancement in the 1800’s, which caused many changes in society and regional identities. Some of these advancements were in the areas of technology, agriculture and commerce. In this period we saw inventions such as the sewing machine, the waltham-lowell factory system, and railroads sweep the nation, and drastically alter the United States economy. The first advancement that impacted the nation was the sewing machine.
The United States of America is one of the most technologically and industrially advanced nations in the world, but that was not always the case. At the start of the Civil War in 1861 the United States was little more than a nation of farmers, but by the time the Spanish-American war began in 1898 the country was one of the most advanced nations in the world. This begs the question, what exactly enabled the United States to be able to industrialize so quickly and efficiently? The industrial growth in the United States of America during the late 1800’s was caused by entrepreneurs, an evolving population, and government assistance.
There were many noticeable components that contributed to the advancement and growth of the United States such as: industrialization, the Great Depression, and war. Of the many occurrences, technology had the single greatest impact on the continued evolution of the United States. The new inventions, new discoveries, and new innovation led to greater economic growth and wealth that the American people experienced during 1920-1940. One invention that influenced and continues to impact American lives is the automobile. Kyvig (2002) has argued that automobile ownership tripled during the 1920s, and by the end of the decade four families out of five owned an automobile.
The Second Industrial Revolution brought many great things to America such as advances in technology, new businesses, job opportunities, and "new" immigrants. America was truly the "City Upon a Hill." America, although booming after the Second Industrial Revolution, was problematic. The period after the Second Industrial Revolution is called the "Gilded Age" by Mark Twain because America at that time was glittering on the outside but corrupt on the inside.1 Alongside all the advances in the economy, technology, and society there are negative factors coinciding with the progress. The negative factors prove to be detrimental to America's society, politics, and economy.
As such, this invention places America at the lead in a world changing inventions, the invention of the telephone credited with the design of newer technologies like the internet and radiotelegraphy. Also, this kind of creativity ensured that farmers in rural areas would no longer be remote in places where a farm was located in isolated areas. The world has America to thank for this kind of technology that upon its foundations, today’s technologies are building on it and has made it possible for the creation of new industries and job opportunities on a global scale. The American automotive industry is famed for the variance in flashy and pioneering cars produced.
The United States saw a major change in the economy and how goods were moved in the country between 1865 and 1945. The ending of the American Civil War allowed American innovators to begin work on new inventions that would change the American economy. The substantial change was the industrialization of America. Development of electricity and new techniques opened job opportunities in industries across America. The United States began to mass produce steel that was able to be used in the construction of major cities, use railroads to expand into the western part of the United States, and the standardization of money, roads, railroads, and laws surrounding quality of life.
