The most objective way to look at how technology has affected the modern day world, is to look at it as a tool. When you look at technology in this way you begin to see not only the good effects of technology, but the bad effects too. If you look at the Industrial Revolution as a tool as well, you can also begin to see the effects it had on the world and society as a whole. With those effects being mostly negative because of an increase in alcoholism, child abuse and labor, and the spread of pollution. One of the first reasons the Industrial Revolution mostly had a negative effect on society is its part in the rise of alcoholism. During the day, men worked long hours, this increased stress and men turned to pubs to help them relieve that stress. As more people went to pubs to drink, and some to get prostitutes, alcoholism increased. This led to spouse and child abuse which is another negative effect that the Industrial Revolution had on society. Child abuse and child labor is another negative effect of the Industrial Revolution. During the Industrial Revolution, wages earned by the mother and father of a house was not enough to maintain a steady living. Not only would these machines take lives, they would also end up spreading pollution to the natural environment. This was a large problem when some machines began to run off of water, factories were beginning to be built next to rivers, and these factories would then dump waste into those rivers and it damaged the environment greatly.
