Why Hubris is Humanity’s Greatest Enemy in Manhunt: Unabomber Hubris, when a person becomes excessively prideful, is humans’ greatest nemesis and challenge. This is demonstrated with the character Ted Kaczynski in the television series Manhunt: Unabomber directed by Andrew Sodroski. Kaczynski’s main goal is to have his “manifesto” published across the world which becomes the main proof the FBI has on the identity of the Unabomber. Additionally, during the courthouse hearings, Kaczynski finds out that his lawyers are pursuing the insanity appeal without his consent in which was the greatest instance of his hubris being shown. Fitzgerald has a conversation with Kazcynski in which Fitzgerald tells Kacznski about his lawyers’ plans to pursue an insanity plea in hopes of not having him go on death row. Kaczynski says after confronting Judy about pursuing the insanity plea “You’re not saving my life Judy, you’re saving my body. And you’re saving my body by destroying my life’s work.” (USA vs. Theodore J. Kaszynski) Kaczynski believes that by pursuing the insanity plea people will think that he is insane and it will ruin everything he has ever worked for and will damage his reputation despite being the Unabomber. Finally, enraged, Kaczynski decides to take his lawyers off the case to plead guilty in order to not pursue the insanity plea in hopes to not look insane to the general public. Similarly to his actions proving his hubris, an article states that “Hubris can cause short-sighted, irrational, or harmful behavior since the person does not stop to examine their behavior or consider the opinions of or effects on others when behaving.” (Adam, 2022) By taking off his lawyers, his hubris is shown in which there are also many consequences he faces due to his irrational and prideful behavior. Despite all his prideful efforts, his greatest fear is true, people still see him as insane and irrational.
