My research topic is how Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has affected the perception of the Italian Renaissance to their viewers. I chose this image from the internet of a red-eared turtle and juxtaposed it with the phrase “Renaissance Man”. The term, meaning an individual with a wide variety of knowledge or talent, was originally coined in the Renaissance and is strongly associated with the Italian Renaissance painter Leonardo da Vinci, the namesake for one of the Ninja Turtles. I chose the red-eared turtle as the image subject not only because it was stated to be the type of turtle the ninjas were modeled after, but also because of the bright red-orange markings on the side of its face that contrast with its overall green-hued body. An area blurry but recognizably part of the rock that the turtle is positioned on. I decided on this location because of third-meaning of the image. The rock, though part of the picture is not the main focus and acts as a foundation for the subjects. In the Ninja Turtles, the Italian Renaissance is not its focus, instead, the lending of its artist's names in the popular comic and show acts as a starting point to its viewers about the Renaissance. The position of the words also goes away from the natural direction your eyes go across the picture plane. That paired with a black coloring of the text, though easily read, is obscure it when compared to the brightly colored turtle. Making the text the last thing you notice. When following the lines in the picture, the outer top shell and the natural patterning of the turtle, draw your eyes away from the left of the picture over to the right before turning upwards towards the top corner. Moving with this natural flow of the viewer's eyes, the words should then be placed above the turtle in the top right corner, bringing the viewer’s natural attention to the words instead of making them look for them. But, by not placing the text there the image argues a deviation.
