One of the hardest times in life is as a teenager. The time where everyone is changing and discovering who they are. Teens are under a lot of pressure regarding their futures. Some teenagers have it worse than others and they have more stress in their lives. This is hard considering we are all expected to succeed no matter what. Five authors, who struggled as teens, but went on to unbelievable success were: Michael Oher, Bich Minh Nguyen, Dave Pelzer, Ishmael Beah, and Maya Angelou. Before discussing the lives of the authors listed above, let’s talk about some issues teens face in today’s society. She has written so many important and meaningful poems. My favorite poem is actually one that my dance team is doing a piece to. The poem is called “Still I Rise” and it has different meanings to everyone. In Maya’s book, Letter to My Daughter, she states that everyone should do at least one this that has a positive impact in society. “Be certain that you do not die without doing something wonderful for humanity.” (Angelou 1) There’s something about that quote that gets me thinking. I wonder about all the things I could do. They don’t have to be anything big. It could be something as small as smiling and asking how someone’s day was. I personally have a lot of clothes that I do not wear and wouldn’t mind donating. I know there are many people in need and donating anything that could help them is something I would do. I think everyone should better themselves by making an effort to doing something good. Not only would it help humanity, but it could also make you feel better. In the end, no matter what life throws at you, it’s how you respond to it that matters. The things that the authors in the unit have gone through are difficult. Rape, imprisonment, abuse, and murder have tried to stop them from becoming successful, but they overcame. If it had to be narrowed down to one defining secret that all of the authors had, it would most likely be that of perseverance and
