Temptation is the definition of brutality. It can act, as a strong force that can attack and completely manipulate even the strongest of minds. It acts differently based on individuals, but all infected by such force reach a common goal, a complete loss of sanity. Running into temptation is a way of confronting the demon. This demon takes the form of a person that seems to be guiding the individual towards a better future, like the character of Lord Henry in Wilde’s story, and Mrs. Lovett in the film. This demon can take the form of an egoistic emotion that drives the individual to perform tasks to satisfy their inner pleasures like those of lust in Dorian, and the pleasure of revenge haunting Sweeney Todd. In this story, Mrs. Lovett was the catalyst for Sweeney’s enragement towards the judge: she lied to Todd from the very beginning about his wife’s death. “She poisoned herself, arsenic from the apothecary round the corner, I tried to stop her, but she wouldn't listen to me...” (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, 2007). She encouraged the idea of revenge on Judge Turpin who had wronged him in the past. She manipulated his mind and drove Sweeney insane by encouraging the psychopathic behavior of killing those who had wronged him. Sweeney’s insanity vanished following the reveal of the actual truth. His wife survived her attempted poisoning and was alive all this time as the town's crazy lady, this was hidden by Mrs. Lovett who wanted him all to herself. “Better you should think she was dead. / Yes, I lied 'cause I love you!... I'd be twice the wife she was!...” ( Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, 2007). Sweeney had killed his wife himself out of rage for seeing this stranger in his barber shop, and Out of betrayal, he threw Mrs. Lovett in the oven to burn.
