In the secondary source, Ancient Israel, written by Cohen we know that the tension between the Jews and Romans had been fueling for a long time. The main reason why there was so much tension was because of religion. For over sixty years, Jewish people had to pay taxes for many different things which caused the Jewish population to be poorer and resulted in them having to sell their home and lands. It is obvious why the Jews would revolt against the roman rule especially since they had been mistreated for so long. There had been a few riots in the past with different proctors but nothing that escalated to the point of the “Great Revolt”. The war began when the procurator Florus seized 17 talents from the Jewish temple to try and get back the Jews for what he claimed was uncollected taxes. Antiquities, written by Josephus Flavius we see that the issue of religion played an extremely large role in this time period. They were mistreated based on their religion in many different ways such as receiving no wages. The Jews were extremely scared from the Romans because they believed that their treasures would be taken from them if they didn’t work. The Roman government didn’t care about what the Jews really wanted. In the text it stated that the ruler denied the son of Gamaliel to become the high priesthood and give it to the son of Theophilus. All of this started fueling the revolt. Religion plays such a big part in this. The roman rulers wanted to get rid of the Jewish people in any way that they could. Depriving people of basic things like money plays a huge role on why there was so much tension and why the war started. This war could have been prevented, if people were treated the same and not based on their religion. Since it was a big deal to the roman government and they felt like Jews weren’t supposed to be treated correctly, it completely destroyed the
