Even with just hearing the introduction of the podcast, I was interested to hear Hamlet from a different perspective. It would be murders acting out murder scenes. I thought this would be fascinating to hear. Each Act took about six months for Agnes and her actors to learn. After they learned their parts, they performed it in front of audiences. Since most of the inmates had a limited education, they pronounced many of the shakespearean words erroneously. However, even though they do not completely understand what they were reciting, they grew to have a personal connection with these characters; they were able to relate with them. In Act V, there were four people that played Hamlet. It was originally meant to split up the long speeches, but it also represented the different personalities of the inmates. I found this intriguing. Hamlet also has different sides to him, which makes him a confusing and ambiguous character. Often in prison, inmates turn off their emotions and try to act tough so no one will mess with them. Yet, to perform Shakespeare's play, one needs to show passion and emotions while acting. He acted tough and saw himself superior to everyone else. Big Hutch played the character of Horatio. It is interesting to see how he viewed the story differently to what most others think. He believed that Horatio is not a best friend, but a “chump,” just someone who listens to Hamlet and follows his instructions. I never saw the story in this perspective. I feel like people sometimes stereotypes prisoners as stupid, but surprisingly they see things normal people do not see. Big Hutch also connected the play’s characters to people he saw in the prison every day. Many of them have characteristics and traits that are similar. With Hutch’s view point, you could probably create a prison version of the
