A social networking site is an online platform that is used by people to build social relations with other people who share similar interests and ideas. Building relationships and connecting with an audience are the fundamentals of social media. These connections are relative to a person’s morals and values. The best channel for amplifying content compared to the average peer-to-peer conversation is social media. Consistently, networking sites push the boundaries, some with serious consequences. The dated version of attending school with pen and paper has become a concept of the past. Now, most supplies needed to interact in the classroom are stored in the cloud and are accessible via a desktop or mobile device. This modification to the classroom has altered the way students approach their 4-inch screens as they are constantly exposed to technology in and outside the classroom. The critically acclaimed book titled “Terms of Service” was published with the ‘distraction’ of social media. Jacob Silverman in his book elaborates on this with the following “Working on this book, I, idly and frequently without reason, switched over to my browser and went to Twitter, Tumblr, or Facebook…” (Silverman 341). It became routinized for Silverman to constantly check his social media to see what was new in the Twittersphere. With him surfing the web, it gave him and his readers a real life example of being distracted by social media. Even though this would relatively be seen as a reason to abstain from social media, it gave Silverman a focal point for the direction of his book.
