Tessie Hutchinson should not have been stoned to death in The Lottery. She was completely innocent of any crime that we know of, had a family that she was taking care of, and seemed to be one of the only voices of reason in the village. When she is introduced, she is portrayed as a funny wife. She forgot that it was June 27th because she was taking care of the house for her family. She called out that the lottery system wasn’t fair, they even said that every year it gets faster and faster.
Based on the words and actions of Tessie in Shirley Jackson’s story “The Lottery” she is hesitant and angry about the Lottery. For example,”Mr. Summers said that Tessie hesitated for a minute looking around defiantly and then set her lips and went to the box she snatched a paper out and held it behind her”(147).This shows that Tessie is hesitated because she doesn’t want to get picked out of the Lottery. This also shows that she doesn’t want to get picked out of the Lottery but she gets bad luck and she get the black dot .In Addition “Tessie shouted to Mr. Summers you didn’t give him time enough to take any paper he wanted.
When the winner is selected for the lottery, the stones are used by the fellow villagers to throw them at the person. Each name of the characters hold a meaning for the lottery or one that indicates what the future of the unlucky winner will be. The lottery date is one of the main symbols of the short story. Today when one thinks about the lottery it means in winning a lumpsum of money. “It has a black spot on it, the black Mr. Summers had made the night before with the heavy pencil in the coal-company office” (Jackson 342). In this case of lottery, the tradition is the winner will get stoned by everyone in town. The color of the dot which is black is symbolic of what it is about to happen to
still believing that they didn’t give her husband enough time to pick a paper slip (5). Mrs. Graves says what the rest of the community is thinking, “ All of us took the same chance.” Showing that every citizen is equal in this situation (5). Furthermore, both the black dot on the paper slips and the black box used to hold the paper slips during the lottery both symbolize something grimmer. The dark colour represents the death one citizen must face, the box itself simulates a coffin, it is a dark box that holds the cruel fate for a poor soul.
However, it is quite opposite of what the story portrays. What the reader does not see from the beginning of the story and does not capture until midway through, is that the lottery is actually something awful. When the lottery processions proceed the story starts to develop a more serious and somber mood. The townspeople show no remorse or empathy for one another and friendships slowly diminish. This is especially true when they know they will soon have to stone to death the villager who has drawn the marked paper; for instance, when Mrs. Delacroix picks up the biggest rock to bludgeon to death, the winner, Mrs. Hutchinson.
The victor of this lottery is stoned by his own town. Friends and family show extreme hardness as they join the heartless gathering to stone one of their own. Minutes before the lottery began, Mrs. Hutchinson had a kindhearted visit with Mrs. Delacroix. Regardless, when Mrs. Hutchinson had been declared champ of the lottery, each past dream of friendship between the two had been destroyed. Mrs. Delacroix was sprinting towards her with the greatest stone she could find, energetic to have the chance to butcher one who, essentially the day going before, she would have called sidekick.
All families of the town gather to draw a slip from a black box, and the Hutchinson family pulls out the “lucky” slip. Tessie Hutchinson argues that it is not fair, the lottery continues anyways. Tessie ends up pulling out a slip with a black dot on it, meaning she won. She was then stoned to death by the rest of the town's citizens. The town believes that the lottery will bring well-growing crops for that year.
One of the pieces of paper has a black dot on it, and the family that receives the black dot has to draw again, this time facing the possibility of death. In the story, Bill Hutchinson has the black dot, and his wife starts screaming about how unfair it is. She starts yelling about how it’s rigged, and how Bill didn’t get to pick the piece of paper he wanted. Her neighbors started yelling at her to shut up, and telling her to be a good sport.
Then they proceeded to the final lottery, which was the one based on who will die. Every person in the family got a paper and the person with the black dot was Tessie Hutchinson, who then started shouting this is unfair and everyone started throwing rocks at her until she died. The whole story is ironic itself because the tone of the story is a place that’s perfect. The dialogue is mainly positive. The title “The Lottery” also gives the reader a positive perception of the story, that the lottery is a contest, not an execution, but it is in fact an execution at the end.

Everyone need to take a slip of paper from a small black box, and the paper with a black dot in it means that the family is the winner, then they raffle again; Bill Hutchinson, who was the husband of the protagonist Tessie Hutchinson picked a paper with a black dot in it, that meant that Tessie was the winner of the lottery, then she starts complaining because the drawing was not conducted properly. At the end, the townspeople moved off to a cleared spot outside the town and they begin stoning her to death (Jackson).

On June 27th on a late summer morning, the villagers of a small New England village gatherd together in the town square to conduct their annual lottery. There is a black box on a stool and in the box there is pieces of paper in the box. Each person from a family get one paper from the black box even the children get a piece of paper and every stayed quiet and nervouse. Then Bill Hutchinson looked at the paper and notice that he got the black dot.

In this short story, after the Hutchinson family gets drawn, Tessie Hutchinson is declared “winner” of the lottery, with her reward is being stoned to death.
The lottery tells us a story about a yearly tradition practiced by the villager of a small town and that their tradition is becoming pointless over time. The lottery is foreshadowing the violent conclusion in the story. The children would put stones in their pockets and make a piles of stones
