The Tet Offensive was a number of battles that took place during the Vietnam War. It was a hugely important offensive strategy by the North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong. It began January 30th the Chinese New year. The goal of the Tet Offensive was to take the Nationalist and the United State armies by complete surprise. There were three major battles of the Tet offensive that happened. The battle of Hue City was one of these very important attacks. The city of Hue was attacked and almost completely overrun. Thousands of people were thought to jeopardize the Communist control; this even includes government officials, and religious figures. The second major battle of the Tet offensive was the battle of Khe Sanh. The fight started on January 29 while multiple Vietnamese military units began to attack early. The Vietnamese casualties in this attack and other things they did in Saigon were way over 1,100 men. When they were aided however, they gained control of large areas in the city. The fighting only lasted almost a week. Certain sections of the city were in ruins because of the United Sates airstrikes and their weapons. General Giap's plan was sectioned into three very specific phases. The first phase, the PAVN would launch an attack on the border of South Vietnam. So they can draw American forces out of the South Vietnamese cities. The general knew this could be an extremely risky and dangerous move. His reasoning was that it would be worth the cost in the end. Phase two of the plan was very spread out attacks by the Viet Cong all over the South Vietnam's cities. This made the people go into a full on revolt against the South Vietnamese government and Americans that everyone hated. Because the South Vietnamese government was overthrown, the Americans would have had no choice but to go to the coast, clear out, and go home.
