Although the Texas Constitution and US Constitution are similar in many ways, an important difference between the two is that he US Constitution was written to be a permanent document that was created purposely to make it difficult to amend. The US Constitution was written where it has certain powers and gives each state the power over issues not included in it. The Texas Constitution has had more frequent changes compared to the U.S. Constitution because Texas created its constitution based on self-government and this gave the people of Texas the opportunity to decide by voting. It seems that there are less advertisements and discussions about constitutional amendments than during the years with a presidential election, as there is an abundance of ads on the television and signs on the side of the road. Presidential elections are also significant because the nation is voting for one person to represent them as a whole, whereas the constitutional amendment elections are voting on laws for the individual states. Some will argue that the low voter turnout of the constitutional elections does not represent the state’s viewpoint and that the legitimacy of these amendments is affected by the low level of turnout. I personally do not think that it affects the legitimacy of the amendments, given that there is a four-step process which takes place for an amendment to be voted on. The formal process does not stipulate that there is a minimum number of votes required for an amendment to be passed or be rejected. It is not that a low turnout affects the legitimacy of the vote as much as it really is not a truthful representation of the people as a whole, which is two different things in my opinion.
