Analysis of the 2nd Continental Congress The 2nd Continental Congress simulation made me realize why the colonist wanted to declare war and independants. The colonists argued about how they were oppressed by their british rulers in the form of taxes. The Tories/Loyalist argued that the colonies would be destroyed by other nations if they did not have the the constant support of the british army/navy. The original political parties in America differed on their views for many things. For instance, a national bank, amount of strength for the government, and the interpretations of the Constitution. One of their biggest disagreements is the view of an alliance with the British vs. an alliance with the French. The Federalists wanted a British alliance over a French alliance.
Fast forward to 1828, Andrew Jackson was elected president. He changed the party’s name from Democratic-Republican to Democrats. His party believed in supporting the rights and interests of the general population (the masses). Political parties, Democratic Republicans and Federalists, started in the U.S. because of differing views of Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson, and the influence of newspapers. Jefferson’s and Hamilton’s different ways of thinking(mostly on issues that was beneficial for the country) played a huge part in the start of political parties. They fought about economy. Jefferson liked farming while Hamilton preferred manufacturing and trade. Interpretation of the Constitution was another thing they fought upon.
Texas has always been very diverse in regards to our political cultures. These cultures have transformed over the years which makes Texas a hard place to govern. According to Daniel Elazar, each state is associated with a political culture classification scheme of moralistic, individualistic, and traditionalistic cultures. By definition, political culture is the shared values and beliefs about the nature of the political world that give us a common language that we can use to discuss and debate ideas. (21) Texas’s political culture is a combination of many political elements.
Despite being the only major political party the Democrats experienced a lot of conflict among themselves Eventfully a party known as the Whigs developed. Both the Democrats and Whigs wanted to expand the numbers of voters. They accomplished this by eliminating several voting restrictions put on white males. Like the Federalist the Whigs supported northern merchants. Besides supporting merchants, the only thing members of the Whig party really had in common was there opposition to the Democratic party.

The political scene in Texas for the past twenty years has been consistently geared to one side (the right) and I do not see it changing anytime soon. This last presidential election was the most controversial and divided this country has seen in decades and if a change was going to happen, it would have happened this cycle. As the Texas counties started submitting their total vote counts for the presidency, the only counties that went blue were the counties with the major Texas cities in them, i.e. Austin and Dallas. The rest of the state stayed red. This trend hasn’t been uncommon.

Political science professor Cal Jilson noted that the dominance of one party in Texas has been a result of the state’s dominant values. The two party system that essentially runs politics in America, effects each state during election times. Some states tend to be more bipolar than others with their Republican and Democrat nominations but Texas is a state that usually stays pretty consistent with its nomination. Since the 1800’s, Texas has shown a strong history of voting for a candidate in the Democratic party, thus making it considered a “Blue State”. I attribute this to the opinions of Texan voters as well as the moral values that they share with who is often perceived as your “Typical Democrat”.
Republicans vs. Democrats When the United States of America was founded, George Washington warned against the formation of political parties. By the time the second election came around there were already two political parties, the Federalist and Democratic-Republicans. These parties eventually turned into the Republican and Democratic parties we have today. While these parties have shifted to become almost polar opposites politically, they still share some common goals.
