Sectionalism was a leading contributor to America’s inability to reach compromise. The North and South possessed passionate political views that differed immensely. Both the Northern and Southern states felt unheard and unconsidered. The reannexation of Texas proved to be pivotal in how close America came to going to fill out war then. Northerners were willing to take Texas as she was, sought not to change the character of her institutions and realized that slavery existed in Texas.
First, they wanted to protect and preserve slavery. For example, they said “the African race is inferior and dependent”, (Doc B).And in another document, they said that they have to send the slaves to the mountains so the attackers won’t take them (Doc D). They wanted to do this because slaves were important to them and were needed to build and produce things. Second, is there love for Texas.
During the early to mid 1800’s there was a high feeling throughout the nation of manifest destiny. It is often debated that slavery was one of the main causes of opposition, or that the other causes were just as important. Back then it was the main discussion and debate. Even though slavery played a major role in the annexation of Texas, it was not the only big idea or concern. My first point to cover is (Document B) the letter to Henry Clay, where Reverend William Channing states he believes annexing Texas would be adding another slave state to the south. "

In the south, people believed that each state should pick if they can legally own slaves, or no. According to Document B “ That in this free government that the servitude of the African race… is mutually beneficial to both bond (slave) and free justified by the experience of mankind.” In Texas they were pro-slavery, and didn't exactly care if the north did have slaves or not. Texas was torn apart whether to join the Union or the Confederacy during the 1850’s. Some people wanted to join the Union while some people wanted Texas to be a part of the Confederacy. Attacks on the South by the North in terms of politics worried the Texans. This would play a big role on whether to join the North or the South. Later Texas would go on to join the South and the Confederacy.
Texans needed people to work on their farms, but they didn't want to pay people. Slaves were the perfect option for the Texans. Once the cotton gin was invented Texans started to have more slaves working on their farms so that there could be more cotton production. Based just on document A I don’t think that Texas should secede from the Union because Texas didn’t have as large a population on slavery in comparison to other states.
Since the Texans did not like the way Mexico treated them, why would they want to promote slavery? No matter what year the constitutions were written in there is were no justification for slavery. It is ashame that individuals, local or higher government could lead Texans to believe that slavery was constitutional. On the other side, how could those Texans not realize that slavery was wrong?
Lots of people lived in and enjoyed Texas back in the 1800’s. Texans felt extremely loyal to Texas since it freed a lot of people after the Mexican War. However, it felt like the North was trying to take away some of their rights and privileges and Texans did not like that at all. Individualistic values in Texas support government activity only “to the extent that it creates opportunity for the individual achievement.” (Texas Political Culture). In other words, Texans are in favor of a limited state government and only encourage government activity when it is needed to create individual opportunities. During the early 1760’s the North and South both had similar cultural ideas like religion, language, owning slaves, and having farms. But then the North realized slavery was wrong. According to document 3 it states “ The South thus quickly established a rural way of life supported by an agricultural economy based on slave labor ... The North's economy came to depend more on trade than on agriculture”(Doc.3). The North and South cultural differences was the reason why the Union divided.
The demonstrations of division in America coexisted many: utopian societies, clashes over public space, backlash alongside immigrants, urban rebellions, black demonstration, and Indian oppositions. America was a separated land in need of change with the South in the biggest demand. The South trusted heavily on agriculture, equally opposed to the North, which was vastly populated and an industrialized union. The South produced cotton, which remained its main cash crop and countless Southerners knew that hefty reliance on slave labor would damage the South ultimately, but their forewarnings were not regarded. The South was constructed on a totalitarian system.
The history of political parties in Texas is marked by nearly a century of Democratic Party dominance followed by a realignment that shifted the balance of power in favor if the republicans. Political science professor Cal Jilson noted that the dominance of one party in Texas has been a result of the state’s dominant values. Both parties in Texas today reflect more conservative versions of their national counterparts. The other chapter talks about the Interest groups in Texas. Interest groups plays a critical role in all democratic systems of government.
With many different situations occurring within the college, our emphasizes will be towards student loans that cause students to become helpless when faced with massive debts. As debts accumulate during and after graduation, having loans can be detrimental to one’s well-being. As a leading cause to many student debts, colleges expect students to carry a vast amount of cash to pay for tuition. Despite these claims, students do not even have the proper living standards to afford school and paying off rents. From this information, we would like college students to reflect on relying on student loans for college.
