In a 1944 case between Korematsu and the United States during World War II, a presidential executive order gave the military authority to exclude citizens of Japanese descent from areas deemed critical to national defense and potentially vulnerable to espionage. Along with this they also arrested Japanese Americans and forced them into internment camps. Korematsu however, a US citizen from ancestry descent, refused to leave his home in San Leandro, California. Korematsu appealed, and in 1944 the case reached the Supreme Court.

Upton Sinclair is the author of the book The Jungle. The Jungle was written to tell the public about the conditions of workplaces, particularly in the meat packing industries. Sinclair used graphic words to describe the rotten, nasty, and contaminated meat. As History.com (2016) states, the thought of what their food was going through hit the public hard in the stomach, but that was not the impact that Sinclair had in mind. History.com (2016) came to this conclusion becasue the information recieved from the book.

In Plano, Texas, many drive to get from place to place, but for this suburban mom’s fear of driving has gotten difficult. For Kalika Patel, driving was never a difficult task, but through past experiences it has gotten difficult. She said this “started when I was running regular errands, but suddenly my blood pressure increased, and I became dizzy” This may not sound like anything major, but after this first incident, this occurred to her many other times. Mrs. Patel said “this kept happening over and over again, finally it felt as it was an anxiety problem” Currently, she still deals with anxiety, but she said “that [her] condition has gotten much better from the few years ago, when this innocent first occurred,” as she told our news team.

The author begins performing research to gain a better understanding of the American prison system, focusing solely on the Texas prison system.
