This is a video of the world’s oldest Bornean Orangutan named Gypsy Chan, who resides in a zoo in Japan. Gypsy is now 62 years old, but in this video taken in 2009 she was only 56 years old. The video starts out with a beautiful orangutan holding a pink brush staring at it intently. She then takes the brush and begins to brush her forehead. She quickly brushes her forehead once, and immediately looks at the brush, inspecting it diligently. Then she brushes the left side of her face precisely twice, quickly stops to inspect the brush. She resumes brushing right side of her face, but she changes her tempo, now vigorously brushing her face as if she had a severe itch. There is a brief pause as she looks at the brush and satisfied with what she …show more content…

She repeats the same motions of brushing, looking at the brush, and wiping the brush clean but with her hand this time. Now she is eating the bristles on the brush and she grabs the towel and wipes the brush off again thoroughly and with vigor and looks at the brush in satisfaction, after that the video abruptly ends. This is a excellent example of sequential tool use in a Great Ape. The book defines the sequential tool use as being when an animal uses Tool 1 to achieve sub-goal 1, then only if sub-goal 1 is reached will Tool 2 be used and that will be used until sub-goal number 2 is reached and the final reward is achieved. In this case, the reward is removing all insects or bugs from her face, and head area, therefore the Tool 1 is the brush, and the sub-goal 1 is removal of things that make her itch, and if you notice she closely inspects the brush to make sure that her sub-goal one is reached which is when the brush is full of bugs or itchy things. Once the sub-goal one is reached, she reaches for her Tool-2 which is the towel and her sub-goal number 2 is to clean off all of the bugs on that brush. Once she is done with sub-goal 2 she goes back to Tool 1 and continues that behavior until the presumably the itchiness is gone (the reward), and when she does not see any bugs on the …show more content…

This video uses two sequential tools and I suspect a third tool is used as well, but it is not in this video, but it is in other videos and that third tool would be water. Anyhow, I can only describe the two tools that I see used in this video. The book also states that sometime there is a considerable delay before tool 2 is used, which in this case most of the time is spent with tool 1 and when the sub-goal one is achieved she grabs tool 2. Therefore, most of the video deals with tool 1. Thus, sequential tool use imposes not only an important time delay before getting at the reward, but requires that an individual applies a “conditional recurrent hierarchical sequence” as each tool is inserted within a sequence and each has to achieve a certain function that is dependent upon the functions performed by previous tools and that will be performed by subsequent ones. There are not that many comments and most of them are literal nonsense, however here are a few “puhahahahhaahahahha.. like a human beeing.. :)” , “Orangs is more interested to adopted human act than another ape's” and “What a nice old lady! Let's see: she's 54 back in '09. That would make her 61 now, I hope she hasn't passed away.” Those are the only semi- intelligent comments, the rest are
