“Dignity is as essential to human life as water, food, and oxygen. The stubborn retention of it, even in the face of extreme physical hardship, can hold a man 's soul in his body long past the point when the body should have surrendered it” (Hillenbrand 189). In the novel Unbroken, written by Laura Hillenbrand, Louis “Louie” Zamperini goes through several life-threatening experiences. After being a troublemaker as a child, and an Olympic athlete, Louie straps up his boots and becomes a bombardier for the Army Air Corps. After a traumatizing crash and a forty-six day survival at sea, Louie is taken captive by Japanese officials.
As a filmmaker myself, I have a some extra insight into the movie. The way the movie is shot is very much like the time period it was supposed to be set in. The director of the film is
Throughout the film, it shows the scenery, clothing worn by the characters and the guns that they used as well. This was a major role in keeping the film true to the Revolutionary period in American history. Although characters such as Benjamin Martin and his family are fictional, there are many pieces that are essential to the film’s plot that are true. Certain events such as the battles, and people are illustrated in throughout the movie for historical accuracy. The restriction on civil liberties was a major factor prompting Americans to rebel.
Pat Solitano, played by Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings Playbook has bipolar I disorder with mild anxious distress. Bipolar I disorder is diagnosed when a full manic episode, which emerges during antidepressant treatment (medication, therapy, etc.), persists at a fully syndromal level beyond the physiological effect (DSM-V, 124). A manic episode is a distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, or irritable mood and persistently increased goal-directed activity, lasting at least one week (DSM-V, 124). Pats specific diagnosis of mild anxious distress derives from his difficulty to concentrate because of worrying, and his unusual restlessness (DSM-V, 149). This criteria, in addition to his necessary hospitalization caused by severe mood disturbance, is necessary to
In the movie “Friday” it displays a typical day in the ghetto and what obstacles two young black men had to go through just to get through one day. Ice Cube a famous American rapper from LA’s popular 90’s hip hop group NWA wrote this historic black comedic/drama film and along plays the main character Craig Jones. Craig plays the neighborhood hero after a chaotic day where he deals with bullies, his love life, annoying neighbors, and scary drug dealers. The film is based in south central LA in the mid 90’s where Craig and his best friend Smokey who is played by comedian/actor Chris Tucker find themselves in trouble after thinking it would be a typical Friday in the ghetto. Craig a young black man in his early twenties lives at home with his parents is determined to leave the ghetto but there 's just some things holding him back.
Gone with the Wind Analysis While watching the film Gone with the Wind most people would pay little to no attention to details like camera angle or lighting. However, Gone with the Wind is a great example of mise-en-scene ,what is physically being shot in the scene without editing and can include, but is not limited to camera movement, lighting, focus and scenery, in many different ways. Mise-en-scene actually appears during the first scene when Scarlett is sitting on the steps of Tara, her family’s plantation, along with her two of her male companions. Scarlett is sitting on the top stair while the twins are sitting on stairs below hers almost as if they were worshipping her. Scarlett is also looking down upon the twins as if she were superior to them.
“The outsiders “well the name really speaks for itself. A outsider is someone who doesn't fit in with the crowed or a particular group of people, and that’s exactly what happen in this story about a young boy and friends that run into alot of trouble because who they are and because of the circumstance that they live in and because they are greaser and for those who may not know greaser are more like the poor kids. The kid end up running away and struggling on their own and really feel like “The Outsides”. A young boy name pony and his friends run off because pony got into a physical argument with his older brother while pony went to clear his mind he end up running into trouble.
UP The movie Up directed by Pete Docter, showed great points throughout the movie to show several different types of developments and interactions between the different characters that relate back to what has been taught in class. The movie portrays the main characters, Carl, and Russell. In the beginning, there is a montage of Carl’s life with his wife, showing them growing old together and all the dreams they share. One dream was to go to a place called Paradise Falls, in South America.
Survival is a difficult thing to accomplish when you are forced into a dangerous environment against your own will. In “The Maze Runner,” by James Dashner, a teen named Thomas is forced into the Maze not remembering anything from his past. He and his fellow Glade members have to solve the Maze and escape it because the days wear on, the safety of the Glade slowly diminishes. But before he can escape, he has to survive. But Thomas is faced with other problems: people who don’t believe that the Glade is weakening and are giving up on trying to solve the Maze.
One aspect of class that carried on further into our readings that truly appealed to me was the philosophical and concrete explanation of a mask and its purposes, in the graphic novel, V for Vendetta by Alan Moore. Within the graphic novel we get insight into V’s purpose he hold of wearing the mask, which is to hide his identity and strengthen the idea that anyone can be behind the mask. V reiterates this theory by saying, “Behind this mask there is more than just flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea... and ideas are bulletproof.” With this said, he want the idea of the mask to be an idea, and idea with the face for the battle against corruption and the injustices facing the government.
I found this movie interesting because I agree with what the film implied on how all patient share a commonality called vulnerability. In the movie Wit, you are allowed a peek into the medical world that shows disregard for humanity. The film revolves around an English professor, Vivian Bearing, being diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer, the treatment, and how her professional status is taken away for being a patient. A major theme of this movie is dependency on others by chronicling Vivian 's trial treatment and it allows the viewers a peek into the world of a patient dying from cancer. After watching the film, I noticed that there were a lot of significant moral issues, which correlates with the nursing profession.
In the film 12 Years a Slave the editor, Joe Walker, makes use of a couple of techniques and styles that adds to the film in its own way. Long shots – Joe kept the long shots as long as he thought was necessary to add to the subject matter and the feeling he wanted to bind with the story. At the end of the film there’s this extremely long shot where Solomon is practically staring at the camera for about a minute and a half. The timing of that shot is so perfect because it’s not too short so you don’t have enough time to think about what just happened or too much time to overthink the situation. Closer to the end of the shot he lets the sound fade slowly and rapidly gives you a wakeup call when the next shot starts off where Solomon and the rest of the slaves are busy working in the field.
Genetic analysis should be used freely in society, but only to help those who actually need it. The movie advocates the rules of your genetic makeup which leads to certain opportunities being presented to certain people with higher pedigrees than other. If a person's genetic makeup is sub-par you are unable to obtain your goals in life. While this is not true in the real world it could become a possibility in the future. The movie gives evidence of how your genetic makeup could affect who you love, what jobs you get, and expose you to certain discriminations in your life.
The 1995 film adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, directed by Ang Lee and originally written by Jane Austen, has timeless elements in its composition. Starring Emma Thompson, also the screenwriter, and Kate Winslet as Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, the movie tells of two heroines and their struggle between balancing idealism and reality. As young, female adolescents of the 1800s, they are responsible for finding husbands that can support them financially; and following their father’s death and loss of money, this becomes even more emphasized. But, they come to struggle when having to choose between what their hearts crave, and what their minds know is best. Elinor’s ideal partner is the initially dull Edward Ferrars, who is discovered to be secretly engaged
