A band is formed when a group of instrumentalists plays their specialized instruments. In a band, each member becomes a part of a team, striving toward a common goal. Each of them has to work cooperatively to produce a harmonious sound, and follow the notes a composer has written on a sheet of music. If one member does not pull his or her weight, it can affect the entire performance – it is important for each member to pull together and contribute his or her best to ability. However, this idea is not true. Although it is quite difficult to assume that music players use textual tools because of the name “band,” the written materials can be thoroughly found. For instance, there are written texts that students must learn before they actually get to play their instruments. Every beginning of the year, the music director distributes tons of copies of syllabus materials to band members. A syllabus – written material - plays a role as a contract between the music director and students. By enrolling in a band, members agree to the instructions and guiding references of the course. After reading the documents, students are provided with the sense of what this community will be like. The students get a look at the texts printed in the paper, which informs about how this class should proceed throughout the year and describes the upcoming music festivals that are considered as the most important events in the band. Each syllabus is divided into multiple sections; in fact, every single part is very important in the process of achieving group’s purpose. A diversity of tools is utilized, depending on what community is being studied. A few textual tools that will be analyzed in this paper include the syllabus and the practice books. In addition to the provided practice website, the director distributes the practice books to the students with the intention of cultivating members’ instrumental abilities.
First of all, each member gets a practice book. The practice books are used by both the music director and the students. Then the assembly of band members is assigned to practice rhythm notes before they directly head into playing music. A music director seeks the correct page of the book and informs the students to play the same rhythms in order to ascertain the abilities or skills of each member and to see how the group works together. Here, one thing the director instructs to the members is to always have a pencil on the stand to write down bowings and instructions.
Music, unlike language, utilizes a special arrangement for pitch. Unlike letters in text, music also uses a system of symbols to indicate how pitches should be played. Pitches are stored, indicating concurrent chords.
