Hope Tricia Downing is a world class athlete who has the love and passion for cycling. Trisha was one of the best female cyclists in the country. Her luck then changed when she was struck by a vehicle while on a cycle trip one Sunday afternoon. Trish was rushed to the nearest hospital where she had learned that she suffered from a T-4 spinal cord injury during the wreck. Trish would have to undergo a few surgeries, while also having to learn how to do some everyday tasks. While in the hospital Trish would become very agitated with herself and her new paralyzed lifestyle. During Trish’s time in the hospitals, she would become depressed and tired of life, but she found a way to overcome those challenges. Trish quickly realized she did not want to be the person who gave up after an injury, which gave her the willingness and desire to succeed in her new paraplegic lifestyle. Trisha Downing is the heart of the book being the author. Her tragic accident led her on a struggling yet hopeful journey in her new life. After struggling to find hope in the hospitals Trish had some opportunities to gain her hope in succeeding. Her recreational therapist Claire came to the rescue. The day they both met Trish said “Yeah I used to be a cyclist” (Downing, 81). Claire quickly responded, “You can still be a cyclist” (pg.81), Claire was ultimately the starter for Trish’s new life.
