Plymouth was located in the state of Massachusetts, founded by the passengers that were on the Mayflower ship. This land was utilized for religious reasons toward the people how had arrived there. The people who had established themselves there were encouraged to work together with their family to prosper. When working there, having a good relationship with the Indians was very helpful for them. All though they did have positive situations the first ten years were in fact not so great since a lot of their people died.
The history of Massachusetts includes two religious groups. The Pilgrims can to our colony to separate from the Church of England. They came over from Europe on a ship called the Mayflower. After their arrival at Plymouth Rock at 1620 they agreed to sign the Mayflower Compact, a new form of government that made the laws, the majority rules. Later, they celebrated the first Thanksgiving with the Native Americans.
Starting with the development of New England (One of the British colonies in North America), the founders of New England were Pilgrims who founded Plymouth in 1620. These Pilgrims wanted to find The Promised Land, they wanted success. They left on a ship called Mayflower as permission granted by Virginia. 35 Saints and 65 Strangers were on the Mayflower on their journey. They arrived on Plymouth when they accidently went off course.
“Thanksgiving Myths” Two myths are “The Pilgrims celebrated Thanksgiving every year”, “The Wampanoag brought popcorn to the first Thanksgiving feast”. The truth in these myths are that the Pilgrims did celebrate thanksgiving. That the Pilgrims came to America to for land and for the thanksgiving part. I think people believe this.
Religious controversy became obvious during George Washington's 1789 decree of the first Thanksgiving Day: On Friday, September 25, 1789, Representative Elias Boudinot of New Jersey rose stood and proposed a resolution. He inquired the House to come together with the Senate to endorse to the American citizens thanksgiving, a day full of public offering and prayer by realizing, the favors and sacrifices made by the Almighty God. Boudinot's perseverance ignited a vital debate. Two members from South Carolina, Aedanus Burke and Thomas Tudor Tucker, led the conflict.
People have celebrated this day as early as the eighteenth century, but it did not become an official federal holiday until 1937. The holiday was made to celebrate the beginning of settlement in america by the europeans. People from all over the world may honor it many different ways such as a celebration of Italian-American heritage and to honor Native Americans. However many people do not celebrate this holiday inspired by the Italian explorer. As a child growing up, our parents taught us many fictional characters and myths. For example, Santa Calsus, the Easter Bunny, and the myth behind the tooth fairy. Theses thoughts or “tales” are placed in our head so as children, we have the idea of a perfect happy world. In elementary school, I was taught that thanksgiving was simply a time to stuff your face with turkey. As a grew a bit older thanksgiving was expounded and I learned that the first Thanksgiving Day was celebrated in Plymouth by Pilgrims and Native Americans, and this information was still incorrect.
However, is that really true? Safran Foer explains that turkey wasn’t part of Thanksgiving festivities “until the nineteenth century”, as well as other foods associated with the holiday, such as cranberries and corn (250). No one can’t say that they’re eating turkey because of tradition if it wasn’t eaten until two centuries after Thanksgiving. If Americans want to use this reasoning, they should be eating bean soup, which is believed to be served at the actual first Thanksgiving in the late 1500s (Safran Foer 250). Furthermore, even if turkeys were eaten at the first Thanksgiving, despite not becoming a tradition for 200 years, the turkeys eaten then were nothing like the turkeys we eat now.
Thanksgiving a time where people sit around the table and be thankful for the things they have. However, many people know of how it became a holiday, but people don’t know is who started this holiday. The man who had started Thanksgiving was named William Bradford; It started from his marriage ceremony in the New World where the (Johnson) Wampanoags Native Americans (Whitehurst and Ruffin 18) brought over turkeys and deer to feast on (Johnson). William Bradford was the second governor of Plymouth for his wisdom and leadership; he ran for governor for thirty years with a five year break.
The First Thanksgiving Everyone knows about Thanksgiving and eating turkey and pie, with a little cranberry sauce. Even though that is not what the pilgrims and Indians really did on the first Thanksgiving. Most elementary schools teach about how the pilgrims and Indians were friends. That they wore nice clothing, and ate at a giant table all together with a cornucopia in front of them.
Columbus Day is an international holiday celebrated throughout the United StatesUS that particularly acknowledges Christopher Columbus and his arrival to thein the New World on October 12th, 1492. This holiday honors Columbus’ findings of America and is celebrated for Americans to truly recognize the effect in which he had made on our country and nation as a whole. With this being said, I strongly feel that Columbus Day should be an international holiday celebrated in remembrance of our homes being unearthed and opened to others around the globe. Throughout the 1951 film, A Streetcar Named Desire the audience beholds the story of a young woman who chases her desires and the aftermath that ensues. Directed by Elia Kazan, the film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Tennessee Williams. The movie portrays a young woman with an aristocratic nature by the name of Blanche DuBois, as the film begins the audience watches as she makes her way from her family estate in Mississippi down to stay with her sister in New Orleans. The audience then sees Blanche’s life with her sister Stella, as well as the conflict that arises between Stella’s husband and Blanche. After, the viewers see the gradual downfall of Blanche until her inevitable departure.
Plymouth was founded in 1620, and led by William Bradford. William Bradford’s writing style was simple, and described the suffering and triumphs of the Pilgrims, as shown in his book, Of Plymouth Plantation. The Pilgrims created the Mayflower Compact, which was signed by all the male Pilgrims, in which they agreed to surrender their individual rights for the good of the community, and promised to obey rules and laws passed by elected representatives. This became the basis for the U.S. Constitution. The pilgrims depended on the Bible for setting up the government (31), based on Levitical Law.
In addition, Thanksgiving which originated in Plymouth, is still celebrated today. In addition, Plymouth still exists both in America and in England. Which brings me to my final point, although both colonies did not have a major impact on modern history, Plymouth was the most successful in leaving a mark.
