Before my seventh grade science unit about food and nutrition, I simply thought our food sources were healthful and reliable. However, since then, I have changed my mind. When I read the book The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan, I quickly learned how our country’s food system actually works and was astonished by the ways in which our food is made. For example, animals that we eat like cows and chickens, are fed corn which causes them to get sick because the corn is not the animal's natural diet. As a result, the animals are given antibiotics which can cause humans, who ingest these animals, to become antibiotic resistant.

As a child growing up, our parents taught us many fictional characters and myths. For example, Santa Calsus, the Easter Bunny, and the myth behind the tooth fairy. Theses thoughts or “tales” are placed in our head so as children, we have the idea of a perfect happy world. In elementary school, I was taught that thanksgiving was simply a time to stuff your face with turkey. As a grew a bit older thanksgiving was expounded and I learned that the first Thanksgiving Day was celebrated in Plymouth by Pilgrims and Native Americans, and this information was still incorrect.

Thanksgiving Traditions With Thanksgiving right around the corner, people are daydreaming about all the amazing food they’re going to eat. Mashed potatoes, stuffing, pie and of course turkey! Not only are people thinking about food, they can’t wait to get back to their Thanksgiving traditions. Zach Fisher (9) runs the Turkey Trot 5K in Cedar Rapids every year with his mom and stepdad. He has participated in it since he was little and doesn’t remember a time he lost to his family.
In 1621 the Indians taught the pilgrims how to plant and grow crops so they wouldn’t starve. After the growing came the harvesting, it was a success. They had finally done it and would not starve through the winter. The feast or thanksgiving is all about how the pilgrims had their first successful corn harvest and had plenty of food to gather and share. They shared this feast with the Indians and their leader Massasoit.
Why is thanksgiving so important to me? Well, I personally think that Thanksgiving is my most favorite holiday. The reason Thanksgiving is so important to me is because, I love when family comes over to our house and can sit down, and catch up with one another. My biggest reason Thanksgiving is so important to me is because my family coms over.
Giving is the most important part of Thanksgiving. Another important part of Thanksgiving dinner is to be able to sit down, relax and enjoy your meal with the company of your loved ones. By taking steps in advance you can assure a successful Thanksgiving dinner, minimizing being overwhelmed. Start with your guest list and planning your dinner menu. While searching for recipes, look for simple and easy.
Saving The ThanksGiving Turkey Essay Do you eat turkey on ThanksGiving day ? If you do, well, let’s say you shouldn’t. It is that time of year, that holiday that is always on a Thursday, where families come together to have a feast/dinner. And the main food course is turkey.
Veterans day is a very important day in America (it’s not just an excuse to leave work) Veterans Day is when we remember all of the men and women fighting -and have fought- to keep the liberties and freedoms we enjoy every day. We as American's have grown accustomed to this (and many other) wars, we live in a society that has been affected by the wars so much we chose to neglect the fact that people are dying because of it. We choose not to think of this because it might depress us but, it is the truth. At the core of this tradition is the food, including the turkey. This celebratory turkey feast, according to Siskind, is a symbol for the conquering of Native American tribes. The turkey is noted for its both wild and domesticated likenesses, similar to the Native Americans (179). The Europeans first began eating turkey upon their arrival in North America, as the turkey was traditional only to this region. Therefore, “as a true ‘native of America’ the turkey, wild and domesticated, could easily become a symbol for those other natives” (ibid).
Thanksgivings What does Thanksgiving mean? Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated to cherish and celebrate everything that you are thankful for, but for some people it may be different. Everyone has a different meaning for Thanksgiving. Some just see Thanksgiving Day as a time to stuff their faces with food for no reason, I am one of those people.
As Thanksgiving Day approaches, several people have begun reflecting on their blessings. Norman Rockwell, an American painter and illustrator, was best known for his depiction of everyday American life. In Rockwell’s early years, he putted the emphases of his paintings on the warm and idealistic aspect of world, treating with simplistic charm and certain degree of humor. In January 1943, during World War II, when President Franklin Delano Roosevelt gave an emotionally moving speech, addressing his vision to the American freedom and the desperate need of concern for the real threat of war, Rockwell was greatly inspired.
