The thirteenth amendment was an amendment that was very important in history and changed how we live today. The thirteenth amendment made slavery unconstitutional and illegal to own and trade them. In response to the civil war, the thirteenth amendment was passed. It was ratified by the Congress on December 6, 1865. The thirteenth amendment was passed because many people started to believe that the slaves should be given rights and called equals to the whites.
The 13th amendment has changed American society by being able to communicate, connect, and grow with Caucasian people. This amendment makes are national a whole, that we are all in this together. The 13th amendment did help to bring whites and blacks together. It gives me the benefit to be friends with the other people without the same skin tone, to share the same bathroom with other people. The documentary “13th” highlighted a major issue facing America currently, mass incarcerations. Racism was the underlining them of both Tatum's book and the documentary. The painful past of America was hard to watch. The current state of America is extremely frightening. I would like to believe that the truth would have come out earlier.
It was rough for African Americans in the 1890’s, and though they tried to live a normal easy life they always had obstacles that got in the way. They had thought everything was going good for them with the 13th and 14th amendment being announced. Also The Emancipation Proclamation which stated, on January 1, 1863, "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free" was a speech that actually came out before the 13th and 14th amendment which was the whole reason why those amendments had came out. The 13th amendment stated that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction”. The film 13th directed by Ava DuVernay targets an intended audience of the Media and the three branches of the United States government with an emphasis that mass incarceration is an extension of slavery. It is intended to inform viewers about the criminalization of African Americans and the United States prison boom. 13th uses rhetorical devices in its claim to persuade the viewers by using exemplum in the opening seconds of the film. President Barack Obama presents statistics, saying “the United States is home to 5% of the world’s population but is home to 25% of the world’s prisoners.” Also the film uses a hyperbole in talking about the movie Birth of a Nation produced in 1915 which portrays a black man as a violent savage who will kill white women.
Angela Davis Once said “Well for one, The 13th Amendment to the constitution of the U.S. which abolished slavery, did not abolish slavery for those convicted of a crime.” Although the amendment was desperately needed it made more problems for the U.S.The thirteenth amendment was about abolishing slavery. Many people had different opinions about this amendment. The amendment affected our nation dramatically. The 13th amendment to the United States Constitution says that, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
The thirteenth amendment stated that all former slaves were granted freedom. The reconstruction period, “did create the essential constitutional foundation for further advances in the quest for equality”. It laid the building blocks for the future building for civil rights not just for blacks but women and other minorities. Former slaves, “ found comfort in their family and in the churches they established”. Blacks took community in each other and bonded over the mutual idea of freedom .
It appealed to a people that were protesting for equal rights, the activist, white people, Negros, to government to enforce the 15th Amendment and to people that were literally dying for the cause to enforce change within our constitution especially the fifth teen amendment, because there were people getting beat to dead for protesting for their rights. According to the 15th Amendment, it gives everyone the right to vote it did not matter the color of their skin. It was a right that was owed to the Negros, which gives them the right to vote. Negros was losing their lives protesting and fighting for a cause that belonged to them
Post Civil War, African Americans started to gain rights to gain rights, and soon gain rights equal to whites. While there were some people/things standing in their way (KKK, Black Codes), in the end they got what they needed; Equality. Many acts and laws were passed to aid the new rights now held by African Americans, as well as the numerous people willing to help. New Amendments were added to give African Americans rights after the war, all giving them some equal rights to whites. The first of the three added was the Thirteenth Amendment, it gave African Americans freedom from slave owners, and stated that no one could be kept as a slave in the U.S..
I feel this way because it brought change to many people’s lives. After the filming of the “The Wasteland”, the people who had some of the paintings made n their honor changed their lives. Not everyone had the courage to walk away from the life as they knew it, but the ones that did seemed happy about it. However, Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright” made a large impact also. Both the video and the song itself brought about change in the community and in others.
I liked this video because it is such a powerful positive message. There is no part of this video that I don't like. I feel some people may say it’s sad or depressing however, I think this is a very important video because you need to learn about the tragedies that people go through and overcome. I would use this message to teach that tratagies don’t define you they only change you can still be happy and how important resilience is the quality of life can still be great. I would use the speaker's message when working with adolescents to show them how quickly lives can be changed and how things can change for the better.
It shows African Americans attacking Whites and being the ones in control. The films side comments would say the power and new equality of blacks while the Whites were helpless and scared. In actual history, African Americans were never fully given equality, or high-ranking positions, and were always treated like slaves; even after the 14th amendment was placed. Also, at the election, Blacks weren’t allowing the Whites to vote. The 15th amendment gives the right for African Americans to vote but wasn’t practiced during that time period because of the White supremacy that was still present.
