The 1980 Presidential Campaign was between Ronald Reagan and President Jimmy Carter. In this campaign several key issues were discussed. Reagan provided solutions for the armed forces, the Nuclear Arms Race, terrorism, the nation's economy, and urban policies. He used several tactics to wage a successful campaign. By appealing to Republican values, Reagan received the votes of many heartfelt Americans and is still admired by many to this day. One of the key issues Reagan brought up throughout his campaign was the United States Armed Forces. This is what the inflation felt like to Reagan. The inflation happened significantly when President Carter raised the inflation rate from 4.8 percent to 12.7 percent. That was a crucial increase since President Ford's term; that was about a 2.6 percent increase. This inflation had over eight million men and women out of work. About two million of them lost their jobs because of this inflation in the last couple of months in President Carter's term. In Carter's 1980 economic message, he stated the he would reduce the productivity and the gross national production. This would increase the unemployment rate which would handle the inflation, but would leave millions without a job. That went from 12 to 18 percent. Carter blamed the people for causing the inflation. Carter also blamed the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, Federal Reserve System, the lack of productivity. Reagan said that the people did not cause by living too well, but the government was living too well. Another reason the inflation was so high was because the government revenues had not been keeping pace with the demand of government spending. Reagan talked to many different Congressmen who had the same ideas that he did by using tax incentives and cooperating with private sectors we could help the people on welfare who were unemployed in that area. The tax incentives would create businesses by providing jobs for the unemployed in that area and in other areas. Even for a period of time the businesses would not have an increase in property tax and the unused property would not be loss to the city. The city would not be losing any tax from unused property; there would only be a delay. The people that had jobs were wards of the government. Then they would be given tax incentives because it would not cost the government anything. During President Carter's term, Carter went to the South Bronx and promised to build a program to refurbish and remodel the broken down buildings. However, buildings were left bare, bulldozed down. We charged people to take tours through the broken down streets and buildings. Most of these buildings that people lived in were multi racial non-white citizens of the United States. Since there was a number of non-white citizens, they received racial criticism from many white United States citizens. A lot of these non white citizens felt that there was a racial face off at their jobs, schools, and homes while non whites seeked the benefits of a free society.
