Community Influences
The community that people live in influences them in many ways, and not many people take the time to think about that. An example of this idea is set in The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. The genre of the story is Young Adult Fiction and the story mostly takes place on a Spokane Native American reservation. The story is about a teenager named Junior who lives on that reservation and is different compared to all the other kids on the reservation. During his days at Reardan, people closest to him like his Grandmother and sister passed away. In that time, the entire reservation community came together and supported Juniors family. With all the past behind, they came together on a common denominator, the love for Grandma spirit. “No matter what else happened between my tribe and me, I would always love them for giving me peace on the day of my grandmother's funeral” (Alexie 128 pdf). This proves that what they were fighting each other for was a waste of time. The fact that a funeral brings everyone together is a good thing, but why were there fights to begin with? Reardan was also a good place for Munior to be as he grew into the school day by day, especially with the basketball team. “The buzzer sounded. The game was over. We had killed the Redskins. Yep, we had humiliated them. We were dancing around the gym, laughing and screaming and chanting. My teammates mobbed me. They lifted me up on their shoulders and carried me around the gym”( Alexie 156 pdf). Junior was very motivated on the Reardan basketball team which serves as another lesson from the author Sherman Alexie, if you feel lonely and down, try out different extracurricular activities which bring you closer to other
