“The very ink with which history is written is merely fluid prejudice,” a quote by Mark Twain. There will always be hatred and love throughout the world, but to get from one to the other we must get over all of our prejudices. We see prejudice everyday, whether it be against a black man in a grocery store or a child being forced to the sidelines because of what he’s wearing or his looks. We’re going to be discussing the prejudices in books and a moment in real life history. We’ll be focusing on The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, To Kill a Mockingbird, the Holocaust, and The Merchant of Venice, and how they have prejudice in them. From 1933 to 1945, 6 million Jews, and others minorities, were murdered and many more died afterwards. If that’s not prejudice, then I don’t know what is! Jews, Gypsies, disabled, handicapped, and many more were killed viciously in murder camps, mainly in Germany and Poland. The Nazi Party were responsible for every death that occurred in those camps. But even through the worst of times, people prevailed against all odds. This is shown through the movies, Defiance and Schindler’s List, books, The Island on Bird Street, and also the many stories from survivors themselves. The people that weren’t sent into the concentration camps, were either in hiding or being experimented on by awful doctors. The Nazis wanted the Jews and Gypsies eradicated because of their religion, but it wasn’t only religion that was targeted, it was the handicapped and the mentally and physically disabled that were being killed because they were not perfect in Nazi eyes. The Nazis wanted a perfect ‘Aryan race’, which was blonde haired, blue eyed, tall, and Christian. A Jew or Gypsy almost never fit the criteria for this ‘master race’. In the book, The Island on Bird Street a young boy is ripped away from his father because his family was Jewish. He was forced to scavenge and freeze all alone because the Nazis took away his only family. They were spit on, called nasty names, and were cheated out of their money. In the story a man named Antonio, who is the merchant of Venice, sets out to help his friend, Bassanio, in getting a very beautiful lady. But, their problem is that Bassanio needs money that he does not have and Antonio notices this. Antonio, himself has quite a bit of money coming from around the world on ships. So, Antonio sets out to find Shylock, a Jewish moneylender. He asks Shylock for a sum of money, but Shylock is very wary to give it up. Antonio has belittled Shylock in the past by spitting on him and never giving him the time of day. In the end Shylock gives in, but not without a price. He calls for a chunk of Antonio’s flesh if the debt is not repaid. When the debt is not paid, Shylock seeks revenge. He wants the flesh to symbol his revenge, as flesh is really only good for the fish. He wants to put the Jewish prejudice into light. He even says, “To bait fish withal; if it will feed nothing else, it will feed my revenge. He hath disgraced me and hindered me half a million, laughed at my losses, mocked at my gains, scorned my nation, thwarted my bargains, cooled my friends, heated mine enemies-and what’s his reason? I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions?
