Education has been a fundamental part of many societies for decades. The Ancient Greeks educated their wealthy youth in order to work to comprehend the world around them. The early Protestants used education to teach their children the Bible. During the 19th century, America started free public education for a privileged few. Over the years, the exclusive few has grown to encompass all citizens and education is not only accessible to all, but required for all. The education system has come under scrutiny. The education system itself and the parents of its students are questioning what is the purpose of education and do we accomplish it. The school system itself can help shed a light on the purpose of education. Individual schools vie for the highest test score; this leads educators to act under the belief that higher test scores to show accumulation of information is the true purpose of education. The learning of information is not the purpose of education, but rather the rich identity of a learner is sparked by the tinder of information. Those around any individual assist in developing their individual identity. For instance, I have picked up mannerism of my friends like words, phrases, and hand motions. The information engrained in us in school also develops who we are in a similar way. In order to survive, a spark must be able endure on its own. At first, it requires another to give it a continual source of tinder in order to devour all that is around it and grow to be full-blown fire. A teacher provides this tinder in the embodiment of information to guide them in how to sate their enkindled appetite to discern the enigmas of the cosmos. Upon this counsel, the student learns how to instruct themselves and further the knowledge of those before them. Upon the insight from earlier minds, students can base new questions and make new decisions that lead to the development of the student’s own conclusions and unique characteristics that finalize their identity and allow them to separate themselves from independent identities …show more content…

Fire is knowledgeable and durable, but as spark it is an innocent, fragile ward of its caretakers vulnerable to interference. The cacophonous uproar of distractions in the world’s tempest of information blows astray many students. Students are in the process of establishing their pre-frontal cortex, the integral part of the brain for optimal decision making. Without the endowment of decision making, the storm of distractions can engulf a growing spark and extinguish it. The collapse of a student is the continual concern of parents and educators. Parents wish teachers to control their students and force them to deny the storm. They want the burgeoning flame inside their child to be under their control and not waiver or question an order. This requires discipline and structure to develop what is right and wrong. Schools must grow perfect, structured students that just carry on and carry out a task in the manner taught perfectly every time. A flame cannot survive under this pressure. The adage a” burnt-out” student describes a student who has been pressured to be impeccable till they hit their breaking point. This excessive strain causes the flame either to be extinguished from the world forever or to continue on a destructive path burning those around it in its agony and turmoil.
