Many people come to America to chase and experience the “American Dream” and also live out their life to the fullest; which they could not have had if they would have lived in other countries from around the world; as they don't have equal rights like
The first settlers of America came in hope of a promising future and new opportunities. This lead to the concept of the American Dream, and the belief that one can go from rags to riches. Many people want to achieve the "rags to riches" dream, and in order to pursue it, some immigrate to the United States. My great-grandfather wanted to achieve this dream as well.
Immigrants were coming from all around the world for a better life and better opportunity in the new nation. “A working Man’s Recollections of America” by Knights Penny Magazine (1846), mentions that “ The new emigrant, again, has heard of the successes of some of his acquaintance who went out years ago, and be looks for equal success in his own case, losing sigh of the multitudes who left their homes with the same views and have been miserably disappointed. That means immigrants come for a better life but they find out that they have to working out of their power to achieve their dreams, they find it difficult to keep pace with the stirring rivalry around them, plus the income was not high as they expected when they left their country. The immigrants expected to go through life with less working and less difficulties and basically an easy life, but they ended finding that they have to work harder than they used to work in their own country to dream of getting a comfortable life. However some were quite happy about leaving and immigrating to the United States as John Doyle’s letter to Fanny explains how he was when he moved to the new nation.
Immigrants go through blood, sweat, and tears to provide for their families and live out the American dream. They risk their lives swimming across the Rio Grande River in order to supply money and put food on the table for their families. Although they make it out of Mexico their hardships are just beginning. Once the immigrants get to San Antonio they have to work their way up to the real money.
Robots and machines were created to make our lives easier by taking repetitive jobs off our hands and saving time. For instance electric washing machines transformed clothes cleaning from an hours-long task into something accomplished with the push of a button. Recently machines have started to take a bigger role in our lives putting some out of work. Factory and manual labor provide uneducated and unskilled workers with entry level jobs to make a living. In the past, America was promoted as the land of opportunity which brought in new people from around the world, but studies are showing a steady decrease in Immigrants today.
As read in the previous paragraphs, in many cases people like Jurgis Rudkus work very hard and long hour in dangerous environments with very low pay. They also live in homes that are not suitable for adults let alone children, and get looked down simply because they are not white Americans. Violations of human integrity have been an insidious truth surrounding immigrants; often their own naivety used as ammunition to rob the ambitions they once held so closely. Living in a potent economic country, immigrants like us have found more chances of employment from low skilled level to professional level with increased salary. We can get better pay compared to what we can get in our country. The dollar value is also much higher and more stable than many other countries’ currency which gives us a chance to support relatives still residing back in our native land. Finally, we come to the United States because we have our families already residing here and we desire to be reunited with them.
First generation immigrants sacrifice their adulthood in search of a better life for their family and for future generations to come. My father came from Peru to support his family. He was the first person in his family to come to America. He works in road construction from morning until night so that my family is supported. The desire to repay both of my parents is the belief that guides my life.
Immigration and The American Dream Immigrants from the mid 19th century and early 20th century consisted of mainly Southern and Eastern Europe, Asia, and elsewhere. Immigrants motivations, experiences, and impacts shaped what an immigrant had to go through being a different person from another country.
