“The term “American Dream” is used in many ways, but it essentially is an idea that suggests that anyone in the U.S. can succeed through hard work and has the potential to lead a happy, successful life.” (McMahon). The American Dream, according to Google, is everybody can achieve wealth and through hard work, determination, and good fortune. For most people, the American Dream is for lower class people trying to climb the social ladder to be considered upper class.
An American dream today would include contributing to the community and society, valuing nature, and spending time with family and friends. Now money won't impress people as what it did back in the day. So living a life where yourself can sleep at night and smiling is the present American dream. In addition to people having equal and inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of their own happiness. Today the American dream is attainable to anyone as long they put their time and heart into what they desire to accomplish. Some civilians say their dream is to obtain a great education over here in American compared to what they were given.
Pursuing the Unattainable ¨Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.¨ An unalienable right, provided by the Constitutions Declaration of Independence, a right in which our government is expected to secure. The idea of a ¨happiness¨ that could be, allows us to hope, hope for a better and more fulfilling life. Something that we can not only reach for and attain but maintain as well. The life we fantasize about, our ¨white picket fence,” and American Dream.
American Dream American Dream has many different definitions in this day and age. For some it 's starting from little and making their way up to a successful prosperous life. For others it 's reaching happiness and a family. And for some the American dream is freedom but however the American dream is portrayed they all have something in common and that is happiness.
The initial paragraphs of John Steinbeck’s novella Of Mice and Men introduces Lennie and George, two men living on the road, in search of a job. Both men have dreams of their own and depend on each other in order to achieve them. George takes care of Lennie, who is mentally incapable, while Lennie provides company to George. These men wander around hoping to achieve the American Dream. They continue to go after it, without realizing that they will never be able to obtain it.
During the Great Depression, many unemployed workers moved to California to look for work on the ranches. This was because they had a dream to become successful, which is also called “the American dream”. In John Steinbeck’s book Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie, the two main protagonists, worked on a ranch chasing the american dream just like many other americans who dreamt of becoming successful. They tried to save money to buy their own land and live a life where they were successful. However, they never accomplished that, and like many others, did not realize they would never accomplish it.
In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, throughout the book, there is a recurring theme of characters having their “American Dreams” crushed. The book is set on a ranch in the 1930s, which is the time period of the Great Depression. During these hard times, many people had their dreams crushed and lost almost all progress. In Of Mice and Men, we see that the main characters - Lennie and George - both have an “American Dream”. As the story progresses, we meet more characters that also have dreams.
This novel talks about the life in America during those times back in 1937 how many people struggled to live. Many people during those days lost their jobs. There was no welfare state or unemployment benefit. Disabled or old people had to depend on their families or charity and keep working for as long as they could. Everyone was so competitive in order to get a job.
