Will Anybody Be Able to Retire, Especially if They're Black? It's called the American Dream. The idea that every citizen of the United States should have the opportunity to be successful and prosperous if they are determined and work hard. These same citizens would then be able to enjoy their senior years having put aside enough money to retire and enjoy the fruit of their labor. It seems that for many a word was left out. The slogan should be "The American Pipe Dream", because it does not seem that this dream will ever be within their reach. In a new survey by the American Association of Retired People (AARP) titled “High Anxiety: New York City African American Gen X and Boomers Struggle with Stress, Savings and Security”, investigators found a bleak outlook for many black Americans. Different generations don't like each other's music, they don't agree on politics, and clothing styles drive each other crazy. This survey found that there is finally something on which father and son, mother and daughter can agree. Sadly, what they agree on is that the financial future for both of them is bleak. The Network Journal notes that the study was presented by an AARP State delegation to financial experts and entrepreneurs, Harlem business owners, and even officials from Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office.
