In the United States today, a large part of the average person’s life is food. Each individual consumes nearly one ton of food each year, but never knows what they are truly putting into their body. Upton Sinclair’s novel, The Jungle, was one of the earliest works that provided people an insight to the production of their food. The novel was originally written to show the mistreatment of the workers, typically immigrants, but instead resulted in the passing of the Pure Food Act of 1906. The movie, Food Inc. provides today’s people the same insight that The Jungle gave the people in 1906.

Moreover, having animals as the main characters and a farm as the main setting helped me to understand more the story 2) Yes, many times people want to make changes favorable to one group of people, especially when we have witnessed injustices or unpleasant events, we seek to fight for change, however, it is sad to see that just as we can achieve change, we ourselves can act with injustice for other groups as well.
Similarly in the novel Barbara and her coworkers ate non-healthy food such as chips because that was the cheapest thing that they could afford to eat. However, when Barbara is in Minnesota she informs us that the cheapest thing that a person can eat is Chinese or KFC. Eating Kentucky Fried Chicken everyday is not healthy but is the cheapest so becomes a source of food for many. Also, in the first article it states that, “For food insecurity, we defined anyone having any positive response to the following 3 questions: in the past year did they, or their family, (1) worry that their food would run out, (2) have the food that they bought not last and not have money to buy more, and (3) cut the size of meals or skipped meals because there was not enough money for food” ( pg. 72). This quote is amazing because these questions are really bothering many who can’t afford food.
Through the book,Standage tries to emphasize the importance that food played in the role of history. He takes us through different parts of the world and shows us the different values that food plays in different locations. Reading this book has helped me gather the questions that I’v been wanting to know.

He had a family in his adulthood and tons of awards he has won for helping out the USA and the world.
Although some may argue it’s hard to be organic in such a huge city because of all of the food deserts, Chicago is trying very hard to counteract this for the sake of the health of our city. Over the past several years, Chicago has dealt with many issues. Not only political issues, but food issues as well. One of them being the food deserts.
